Adam Page should be the one to dethrone Kenny Omega
Despite only existing for less than two years, holding the AEW World Championship is considered to be quite prestigious.
Chris Jericho, Jon Moxley and Kenny Omega are the only three men to have held that title so far. But there are a number of names who should be in the running, like Adam Page, Brian Cage, Scorpio Sky, Penta Zero M and Pac.
But Kenny Omega is the current AEW Champion, and has built an intercompany faction that will keep him on top for the foreseeable future. Eventually, someone will have to take that title from him and that man should, without question, be Adam Page.
Adam Page rides into AEW
“Hangman” Adam Page has been in the business since 2008. The vast majority of his career was split between Ring of Honor and NJPW where he was part of the Bullet Club before signing on with AEW in 2019. For a lot of fans, seeing him on AEW was the first time they had heard of him.
What they got was a high caliber competitor who was truly elite. The man can go in the ring with anyone, and is one of the most well rounded competitors in the business. Plus, Adam Page has his gimmick down pat, which it more than some of the biggest names can say.
Despite being a top tier performer, gold has not followed Page in his career. He held the AEW World Tag Team Championships with Kenny Omega and the ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship alongside The Young Bucks.
What’s weird is that the man never held a singles title in ROH or NJPW. And he has yet to win singles gold in AEW, thought he did have an opportunity very early in the company. Page lost to Chris Jericho in the match to decide who would be AEW’s inaugural champion.
The heart and soul of a company
While fans can argue about who the best wrestler in AEW is, it’s not difficult to see who is the heart and of the company. Adam Page’s journey over the last year and a half has subtly been the driving force of AEW.
Page hasn’t had a lot of title matches or main evented many pay-per-views. He has been the emotional driving force of the company. His journey from The Elite to being played by FTR to feuding with Matt Hardy and now partnering with the Dark Order has been deceptively intense.
Fans have been drawn into his winding path, even when it subtly been woven into the background of the the show week after week. The odyssey of Adam Page might be the most consistent storyline AEW has, going all the way back to the company’s earliest days.
Eventually, that story will need some sort of payoff, something to justify the fan’s engagement in the journey of “Hangman” Adam Page. And the most logical place for that story to end is with the AEW World Championship around Page’s waist.
Adam Page as the AEW World Champion
Given Adam Page’s troubled past with The Elite, it makes sense for him to run up against the current iteration. There’s unfinished business there, which was recently teased as part of a backstage interview alongside the Dark Order.
The other compelling part of this feud would be the Dark Order. Page might not be an official member but he is closely tied with the faction. They could keep the rest of The Elite off of his back while he takes down Kenny Omega. Plus, who doesn’t want to see -1 get his hands on Don Callis?
This isn’t just an issue of Adam Page being next in line to hold a title belt, or him being owed it. From a storyline perspective and based on what’s been building since the early days, having Page pick up the AEW World Championship makes the most sense.
But he’s also just a great wrestler. The show Adam Page and Kenny Omega would put on would undoubtedly be epic, and a Match of the Year contender. It is, without question, the right move for AEW going into the next phase of their company.
