NXT: Sarray will be the women’s division’s top babyface

The April 20 episode of NXT featured the anticipated debut of Sarray (formerly known as Sareee), and the Joshi standout lived up to the hype in her inaugural match with WWE’s “alternative” brand.

In her match with rising star Zoey Stark, Sarray received ample time to showcase her wrestling skills opposite a capable opponent. Sure, a simple enhancement match against a challenger that’s lower in the pecking order would’ve allowed her to introduce the NXT audience to her moveset without giving Stark another competitive loss, but this was just as effective in establishing who she is and what she can do.

Most importantly, this debut informed NXT fans that they can expect to see her featured as the top babyface of the women’s division in the near future.

It might not be right away, but Sarray’s time at the top of the NXT Women’s division will come very soon.

Despite some recent missteps — miscasting Toni Storm, Dakota Kai, and Candice LeRae as heels; most of Rhea Ripley’s booking after losing the Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania 36; adding new tag team championships without having a clear direction for them — the NXT women’s division is still the deepest of all the non-women’s-only promotions.

Aside from the depth, which is more reflective of the company’s financial resources than any sort of creative brilliance, NXT still excels at highlighting what the wrestlers do best. Don’t expect that to change with Sarray. As a natural babyface (though that wouldn’t keep the NXT writers from turning her heel) with a pristine workrate, she’ll have no problem winning over the NXT fans.

For now, with NXT clearly focused on pushing Raquel Gonzalez as NXT Women’s Champion, there are more than enough workers in the division to keep Sarray busy until the time comes to crank up her push. She’ll probably get those enhancement matches with the likes of Aliyah in the interim. We might even see her feud with Toni Storm in the next few weeks given what happened following Sarray’s match with Stark — Storm attacked Stark (this Stark push is going just GREAT) and Sarray ran Storm off.

But the endgame here has to be Sarray as the featured protagonist of the division. You don’t sign a wrestler of this caliber to nestle them in the midcard while using them to push other people. There are already too many women in NXT who fit into that category as it is. Why even bother bringing Sarray in if you’re gonna just add her to that list of aimless stars.

Again, this push to the moon (as Cameron Grimes would say) doesn’t need to happen right away, nor is anyone expecting it to happen so soon. But it has to happen at some point. Hopefully, the NXT creative team recognizes this. Otherwise, it will be a waste of everyone’s time.
