WrestleMania Backlash takes place on Sunday, May 16th. Once simply known as “Backlash”, the pay-per-view (PPV) has a rich history in the WWE, typically an event taking place the month after WrestleMania.

It’s been rebranded this year and any long-time wrestling fan can’t help but feel nostalgic about past PPVs. There have been some incredible Backlash matches before 2021, and it was difficult to narrow down the top five. With that said, they are below, listed from oldest to most recent.

The Rock Versus “Stone Cold” Steve Austin – 1999

Two of the greatest WWE performers of all time, with one of the greatest feuds in wrestling history, had to hit this list Backlash list. Add Shane McMahon in the mix as special guest referee, and the Austin versus The Rock Backlash match became an instant classic. The storytelling was phenomenal, and while Stone Cold scored when all was said and done, the WWE Universe became the real winners that night and for years to come.

Randy Orton Versus John Cena Versus Edge Versus Shawn Michaels – 2007

One only needs to look at the participants in this Backlash match to know that it was one of the best of the best. Two Hall of Famers, plus two future Hall of Famers. While some fans, including myself, aren’t always intrigued by a fatal four-way because there is simply too much going on, this 2007 match was an exception for me. The pace was kept at a good notch, and there was a good number of counters that occurred; not to mention those close falls. It was a match that kept everyone on the edge of their seat, as four amazing athletes pulled out all the stops, all in the name of the coveted WWE Championship. In the end, John Cena emerged victoriously.
