Across its three brands, the WWE has perhaps the deepest women’s division in the industry. While it’s difficult to debate that idea, it is also clear that the promotion fails to properly utilize that group at the same time. The number of ways WWE creative has failed this group has long been documented but refusing to establish new names to cheer for is one of them. Sonya Deville’s return helped create a spark that could become a bigger flame if she were to win the Money in the Bank this June.

The Money in the Bank WWE Network special is scheduled for Sunday, June 20. That briefcase has been used in the past to help elevate newer names into the main event scene. Who can forget the first cash-in by Edge, all the way to big moments like Seth Rollins’s WrestleMania cash-in, and Charlotte Flair being the victim of two famous cash-ins, one by Bayley and the other by Carmella?

Sadly, the briefcase was not correctly used at all in 2020. The situation with the women’s briefcase was starkly different than that with the men. Becky Lynch’s departure opened the need for a titleholder and the swerve to include the title with the briefcase that Asuka won felt right. Unfortunately, it did not lead to any big moments for Asuka during her title run. This is 180 degrees different than what occurred with Otis, then The Miz holding the briefcase in one of the worst angles of 2020.

Bringing the conversation back to Deville, she has been a positive element to WWE television since her return. In playing her position to Adam Pearce, it seemed like a matter of time before she made a bigger grab for power. That started with her bringing Charlotte Flair back without any input from Pearce, and viewers can expect this situation to snowball from there. There are hints of a potential angle between Deville and the new version of Alexa Bliss, but that whole angle has left much to be desired.

Deville returning to wrestling action and with the briefcase in tow would make her an intriguing challenger to any champion. She could play off both Rhea Ripley and Bianca Belair very well. If Charlotte was to be champion, then there is the whole “I brought you back” dynamic. Plus, women like Shayna Baszler and Mandy Rose could each be eventual feuds for Deville too. The opportunities to build Deville into a credible threat and an interesting name in the women’s division are already available. The right first step would be to book her to climb the ladder and unhook the promised title shot.

Next. NXT has a lot of heel factions that benefit babyfaces. dark

The WWE women’s division on the main roster needs a boost. Fans want to see these ladies excel and get the same opportunities as their male colleagues. That does not seem to be the case wholesale and it is hurting the product. A step in the right direction would be to begin building new stars and that could start with Sonya Deville at Money in the Bank 2021.
