Monday made one year since Hikaru Shida became the AEW Women’s World Champion. Not only is she the longest reigning women’s champion, but the longest reigning champion in the company’s history. Although the early part of her title reign wasn’t great (through no fault of her own; she wasn’t booked properly, if at all), she has made the AEW Women’s World Championship mean something.

Britt Baker’s star on the rise in AEW

During Shida’s 365 days and counting as champion, another woman has made herself the self-proclaimed “Face of the Division:” Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D. Fans who have watched from the beginning know how much Baker struggled. She had some awful promos, but something finally started to click.

Then, came her injuries. Instead of letting that sidelined her, Baker made herself undeniable. She tricked out her wheelchair, had Rebel, not Reba present her thoughts with visual aids, and sent messages through her best friend, Tony Schiavone.

The feud with Big Swole came next. The two exchanged a war of words and constantly one-upped each other culminating in the first-ever women’s cinematic match at All Out. By then, it was obvious that Baker was a huge star and a legit threat to Shida.

Baker solidifies herself as the “Face of the Division”

Her star shone even brighter during another first for the women: the first women’s main event and the first women’s Unsanctioned Lights Out Anything Goes Match. The match more than lived up to the hype. Although her opponent was victorious, Baker cemented that her bloodied face was, in fact, the “Face of the Division”.

In the following weeks, Baker had been coming for the Number 1 contender spot. She began padding her record by having (very short) matches on AEW Elevation and Dark. Once she officially became the No. 1 contender, Baker vs. Shida was finally official.

While Shida has been an excellent champion, it’s Baker’s time now. She has rolled, lockjawed, and literally bled her way to the top. Baker has experienced firsts that not even Shida has had. The dentist has helped carry the women’s division in the pandemic era.

Baker is the perfect person to dethrone a powerful Shida. She’s an excellent foil as a heel. To truly solidify herself as the “Face of the Division”, she must win the title. She has more than earned her right to become Women’s World Champion.

At Double or Nothing, it’s time for everyone to know that the Women’s Champion is the D.M.D. For the love of wrestling goddesses, maybe she can finally get an action figure as champion.
