AEW: Cody Rhodes needs a main event title run
Cody Rhodes is growing stale. His character is a central figure within All Elite Wrestling, and as a power player at the start of the promotion, he should be featured as such. But the “wash, rinse, and repeat” nature of his character and matches is not coming off as well as it may seem. There is an opportunity to fix this situation and that is placing Cody in the main event, focused on the AEW title.
Yes, Cody is not allowed to compete for the AEW title due to his loss to MJF at AEW Revolution. It was a clear story point that set the stage around the seriousness of Cody’s commitment to defeating MJF. He failed and now he is not allowed to challenge for that tile.
But this is professional wrestling. Angles are meant to be built around telling stories such as Cody doing all that is needed for him to get back to the title picture. Currently, Kenny Omega is the champion and speculation is that Adam “Hangman” Page is the one being built to defeat him. After that occurs, it looks like MJF is slotted as the next top heel in the company. Either way, Cody can be crafted as a top challenger to either man.
Set the scene with Cody cutting one of his passionate promos about wanting what he cannot have and being willing to do anything for it. Without him, AEW would not be a thing and he wants the opportunity to fight for that title. AEW President and CEO, Tony Khan, can answer that call; putting hurdles in Cody’s path that he must overcome to earn that title shot. Once they are completed within months of storytelling the angle ends with Cody earning a title shot against either Page or MJF.
Cody’s time in AEW has had its high moments, and some questionable moments as well. The handling of his feud with MJF helped create one of the top personalities in the company with MJF, but it is left Cody in a precarious position. He is still a big star and name that fans recognize as central to the promotion but imagine the payoff that could come with Cody making a push to the AEW title, having to fight through The Pinnacle, or even his “former friends” in The Elite for that opportunity.
Cody promised that he would never compete for the AEW title to ensure fans that the members of The Elite would not book themselves into all the top positions. AEW continues to do an excellent job of building multiple names at a time. However, something is less enjoyable about Cody’s current position. It can be corrected by telling the right story of him reaching the AEW World Heavyweight Title.
