WWE: 5 Main Roster Superstars Who Are Long Overdue For An Epic Push
By Mark Justice
“WWE, push this superstar!” The common plea utilized by the WWE fanbase has been perpetually relevant from the days of ‘Do you smell what The Rock is cooking?’ to the days of ‘You Can’t See Me’ all the way to the present days of ‘3….2……1… Claymore!’ Instead of releasing talent, the WWE needs to push talent. There is a plenitude of superstars on the main roster who are long overdue for a big push. These superstars are usually underrated superstars in the locker room who do not get the TV time and attention they truly deserve.
Most fans have already discerned that the following superstars are talented in the ring and on the mic, but their talents do not translate accurately towards their booked momentum or character development. Under-appreciated superstars, such as Aleister Black, Andrade, Buddy Murphy, Rusev, Mickie James, IIconics, Ruby Riott, and Zelina Vega and many more are all gone from the WWE and were recently subjected to this vice. The following will now identify and expound on five superstars who are still in the WWE and are long overdue for a big push.
Instead of releasing talent, the WWE needs to push talent. The following will identify and expound on 5 superstars who are long overdue for a big push.
5.) Angel Garza
The fact that Angel Garza went from becoming a prestigious NXT Cruiserweight Champion to joining an A-Lister faction managed by Zelina Vega all the way to shoving roses in Drew Gulak’s mouth is beyond comprehension. It can be argued that the WWE called up Angel Garza to the main roster too early, but there’s no excuse for failing to utilize a superstar with more charisma than 75% of the locker room. His in-ring work is stellar, and he even has an entertaining Lothario character to keep the fans engaged. Garza has that “IT” factor to turn anything into gold.
4.) Liv Morgan
Liv Morgan started off on the main roster as a member of an impeccable faction known as The Riott Squad that included Ruby Riott and Sarah Logan. The Riott Squad broke up in the 2019 Superstar ShakeUp, and Liv Morgan went on to pursue her own singles career. That singles run was a bust since she was relegated to a directionless infidelity storyline involving Rusev, Lana, and Bobby Lashley. Once that storyline was thankfully dropped, she reunited with Ruby Riott on The Kevin Owens Show and their main goal was to pursue the Women’s Tag Titles.
Although Morgan and Riott were the only legitimate and popular tag team in the division, they were never booked to win those belts. Afterward, Ruby Riott was released and Liv Morgan is now being booked to attempt another singles run since she no longer has a tag team partner. Thanks to her feisty persona and improved in-ring work, Liv Morgan has the potential to be a top babyface in this company. She is currently stuck in a feud with Carmella, but more pathways should open up for her after SummerSlam when the rosters are rumored to be shaken up.
3.) Mustafa Ali
Mustafa Ali started his main roster career on SmackDown after getting called up from 205 Live, where he never won the Cruiserweight Championship but was still a prominent figure on the brand. He was actually being booked for a main event slot against Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship on the road to WrestleMania 35 until he was unfortunately injured and replaced in the Elimination Chamber by Kofi Kingston, who went on to win the WWE Title from Bryan at that Mania and make history. Ever since Ali lost that opportunity, he has been stuck in the mid-card.
Although he was stuck in the mid-card, his diligence and perseverance cannot be ignored. He tried his best to make a story out of everything he was involved in, whether it be Elimination Chamber, King of the Ring, or Money in the Bank. He even attempted a new gimmick as the mysterious Hacker who later transformed into the leader of RETRIBUTION. It was a neat concept that could have worked and possibly be the next Nexus. However, that group was booked for failure the moment they began feuding with another popular faction at the time, The Hurt Business.
Mustafa Ali has been a gem in WWE for way too long to not get pushed for a championship opportunity at this point. His promos, in-ring work, and character development have all been main event level. He is the anti-hero WWE Raw desperately needs right now. However, instead of being in the main event scene on Monday Night Raw, he has been constantly relegated to ‘Main Event,’ where he continues to perform in show-stealing matches and make compelling stories with the likes of Ricochet, Cedric Alexander, Jeff Hardy, and more. It’s the truth, and Ali is the light.
2.) Sonya Deville
Sonya Deville started off on the main roster as a member of an impeccable faction known as Absolution that included Paige and Mandy Rose. After Paige had a neck injury that ended her career, Deville and Rose continued to team up as Fire and Desire and pursue the Women’s Tag Team Titles. Although their team was actually entertaining and worthy of tag team gold, they eventually broke up and delivered a memorable romance storyline involving Otis. Mandy Rose won this feud at last year’s SummerSlam, which led to Sonya Deville leaving WWE ‘forever’.
Despite the stipulation, she eventually returned to the company as a manager of both Raw and SmackDown. Her role as a manager has been exemplary, and fans are itching for the MMA technician to get back in the ring. Deville has the potential to be a top heel in this company. Her promos are scathing and heartless while her in-ring psychology exceeds expectations. Her character resonates with the audience quite well too. She could either be the next Cruella Deville or the first Sonya Deville. The latter is good enough for a MITB victory and future title opportunity.
1.) Big E
Big E debuted on the main roster in 2012 as Dolph Ziggler and AJ Lee’s ‘muscle.’ Once he broke away from that alliance, he went on to win the Intercontinental Championship from Curtis Axel in 2013. Since that title reign was not as memorable as it should have been, he was relegated to the tag division. However, he actually experienced a resurgence in his career because of his brotherhood with Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods that turned into one of the greatest tag teams in the world of professional wrestling: The New Day.
Big E won multiple tag team championships as a member of The New Day over the course of seven years until they unfortunately broke up in the 2020 draft. Many fans arguably clamored for Big E to break away from the goofy aspects of The New Day in order to become a serious main event contender for the world title. Albeit a debatable topic, Big E was able to win the Intercontinental Title for a second time on the Christmas episode while still maintaining his character. Now that he has lost the title to Apollo Crews, he is once again lost in the shuffle.
After losing the IC Title in what was a decent reign, Big E should have been elevated to the main event scene to become a top contender for Roman Reigns’ Universal Championship, which is a goal he has talked extensively and passionately about on Talking Smack with Paul Heyman. He was supposed to feud with Aleister Black as a stepping stone to the main event scene. However, now that Aleister Black is released, Big E is back in the mid card with Apollo Crews, Kevin Owens, and Sami Zayn. The WWE cannot put over 10 years of Big E’s hard work to waste.
Big E has the full package. He has the size, strength, agility, humor, and the power of positivity that make him a beloved top babyface. He just needs the system to get behind him. Consequently, Big E, Sonya Deville, Mustafa Ali, Liv Morgan, and Angel Garza are the five most important main roster superstars who are long overdue for an epic push in 2021. Clearly, there are other superstars that could have been named here, but that’s the name of the game. Stay tuned for more of these WWE Superstar Advocacies on Daily DDT. You don’t want to miss them.
