Sammy Guevara’s potential as a main event babyface for AEW is limitless
AEW has a lot of talent on its main roster that is more than ready for the big time and will help take the company to the next level.
Orange Cassidy. Britt Baker. Anthony Page. These are just a few of the names that have caught the attention of fans. But the one wrestler who might have the biggest upside for AEW is Sammy Guevara, and fans know it.
He has been with the company since moment one, proving himself to be a standout competitor. For him to find the next gear, Sammy needs to be a babyface. That process is in full swing. It’s only a matter of time until he has gold around his waist.
The early days of Sammy Guevara
Sammy Guevara trained at Booker T’s Reality of Wrestling. He would go on to make his first appearance with a major wrestling promotion with the NWA in 2013. Over the next few years, he spent time with PWG, MLW, and Lucha Underground.
A highlight of his PWG run was facing off against Walter for the PWG World Championship. As one would expect, Sammy didn’t win the match, but he did turn a lot of heads during that bout. If nothing else, it put him on the map.
In 2018 and 2019, Guevara worked with Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. He won the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship and held it for several months. It was an integral moment in his career as it proved Sammy could be a main event player in the business.
After AAA, Sammy Guevara signed with AEW. He was actually one-half of the first singles match in AEW history. Kip Sabian and Sammy faced off at Double or Nothing 2019, with Kip picking up the victory. Guevara’s part in this historic event cannot be understated.
The Inner Circle builds Sammy’s profile
In a company that’s now flooded with factions, one of the first major groups was the Inner Circle. Led by Chris Jericho, it featured Jake Hager, Santana and Ortiz, and Sammy Guevara. They quickly established themselves as the top heel faction in AEW.
Despite that, fans gravitated to them. Chris Jericho tends to have that effect on people. It also cannot be denied that fans are fully behind Santana and Ortiz as a team. At some point, AEW will have to put their tag team titles on them.
But a key impact of this faction has been raising the profile of Sammy Guevara. Fans that knew his work loved him, without question. At the same time, he needed something to help elevate him and connect him to this new fan base.
This direct association with Chris Jericho definitely accomplished that. Chris and Sammy have an undeniable chemistry that works. They energize each other. After working with Jericho for the better part of two years, Guevara is now ready for the main event.
Turning babyface with Sammy Guevara
With the advent of the MJF-led heel faction called The Pinnacle, the Inner Circle has officially become babyfaces. Given the fan support they already had, it really wasn’t much of a leap. People love those guys.
Sammy Guevara has the most to benefit from this. He’s can pull off being a heel, but being a face just seems to work better on him. Guevara is currently engaged in a feud with Shawn Spears, which will help build both wrestlers up. Spears should not be overlooked, either.
But this face turn is what will take Guevara to the next level and AEW along with him. So far, the AEW World Champions have been Chris Jericho, Jon Moxley, and Kenny Omega. They all deserved the title but they were also highly recognizable superstars and former champions in other companies.
Sammy Guevara belongs in the AEW title picture. He’s also someone the company has built into a bankable star over the past two years. Putting that title on him as a top babyface champion would be a testament to everything AEW stands for.
