During WWE NXT this week, there was an announcement that the NXT Breakout Tournament is set to return in two weeks. This is a big deal because it is an opportunity to create some new prospects that fans can get behind within the NXT brand. Looking at the current NXT roster, here are some names that should be featured in the tournament and who should make it through to the final match.

The previous edition of the NXT Breakout Tournament featured many talented performers that went on to strong positions in NXT. Bronson Reed, Boa, Angel Garza, Dexter Lumis, Cameron Grimes, Joaquin Wilde, Isiah “Swerve” Scott, and others were involved. ACH, then known as Jordan Myles, won the entire tournament, but his time with the promotion was limited over a serious controversy and accusations of racism. ACH aside, the other members of that tournament have since performed well both on NXT and sparingly on other brands.

Looking at the current NXT roster, here are eight names that should be featured in this showcase:

  • Ashante “Thee” Adonis
  • Tyler Rust
  • A-Kid
  • Carmelo Hayes
  • Trey Baxter
  • Bronson Rechsteiner
  • Ikemen Jiro
  • Ilja Dragunov

Some of these individuals are recognizable to current WWE viewers. Adonis is a part of Hit Row, perhaps the most interesting faction in WWE currently. Baxter and Hayes have recently appeared on NXT in losing bouts against top veterans. Jiro has been featured on 205 Live and NXT. A-Kid and Dragunov are individuals that NXT UK watchers are familiar with as well. Rust has been established on NXT and reintroduced as a part of Diamond Mine. Then there is Rechsteiner, the son of Rick Steiner, who comes with both a wrestling and football background.

WWE has a wealth of talent within the coffers that are not regularly featured on television. There is a need to establish more names, not only for NXT but those that can create interest across the entire promotion. AEW is doing an exceptional job leveraging the young talent on their roster and it is time for the WWE to do the same. They have the resources and roster to do so.

The NXT Breakout Tournament is scheduled to begin on July 13. None of the entrants have been announced, but these eight individuals listed would be a step in the right direction as the company looks to build the next generation of stars.
