Serena Deeb is a valuable veteran for the AEW roster

Building a roster in any sport is a daunting task, even more so for a company that’s creating everything from scratch.

AEW has certainly found that with their Women’s Division. They certainly have more than enough talent to build possibly the best division of its kind in the world. But it needs the booking and the leadership. That’s where Serena Deeb comes in.

Deeb has been on the wrestling scene for more than 15 years, accumulating several championships along the way. While she hasn’t been appearing on programming much, her experience, professionalism, and leadership will take the division to the top.

The history of Serena Deeb

Deeb debuted in 2005 with Ohio Valley Wrestling. She was trained by a veritable litany of legends such as Al Snow. Early opponents included Beth Phoenix, Shelly Martinez, and ODB. That was just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.

She would go on to become OVW’s Women’s Champion before leaving for Shimmer. While Deeb never won their championship, she certainly built a name for herself there. That’s a big part of the reason why WWE came knocking.

Deeb started with FCW in 2009 and debuted on the main roster in 2010. Most WWE fans first got to know her as part of CM Punk’s Straight Edge Society alongside Luke Gallows. When the angle ended, so did her time in the WWE.

After that, she would go on to work with Shimmer as well as all over the indies. Eventually, Deeb would return to WWE in 2017 as a trainer in the WWE Performance Center. Then in 2020, she became one of the cuts of Black Wednesday. That’s when she found another gear.

AEW and NWA

In September 2020, Deeb signed a contract with AEW and joined their Women’s Division. It was already a stacked roster at that point but bringing in Deeb was a good move both for the company and for her.

Through an ongoing working relationship with NWA, one of their star female performers, Thunder Rosa, was able to start working with AEW. It’s assumed by most people that when her NWA contract is up, Rosa will most likely become All Elite.

At the same time, this partnership allowed Deeb to compete for the NWA World Women’s Championship. Shortly after signing with AEW, Serena went on to defeat Thunder Rosa for the title and hung onto it for a more than 200-day run.

While this wasn’t Deeb’s first championship by any stretch of the imagination, it was arguably her most prestigious. More importantly, it set the stage for her to play a bigger part in AEW as the company moves forward into live shows, again.

Leader and mentor

Every match Serena Deeb wrestles is a technical masterpiece. This has been true throughout her career, but a lot of fans have only been cluing into this since she started working with AEW and NWA. But that’s only part of the reason why AEW needs her.

The booking of the Women’s Division is finally starting to come around, though it took some time to get there. But AEW has always had the talent. There are some truly great female wrestlers on their roster. That being said, a lot of them are still relatively green.

Deeb is definitively a seasoned veteran by anyone’s definition, not to mention a technical mastermind in the ring. As AEW continues to grow, she will prove to be an invaluable asset in the continued training and development of new wrestlers in the Women’s Division.

Every locker room needs someone like Serena Deeb in it, particularly a locker room that is still trying to find its footing. Hopefully, AEW management understands the key resource they have on their hands and does not undervalue Deeb the way WWE did.
