This week’s episode of SmackDown comes to us live from the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. WWE Universal Champion, Roman Reigns, and John Cena will come to face-to-face eight days before their blockbuster match at SummerSlam. Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair will have a contract signing for their SmackDown Women’s Title match at SummerSlam. Finally, Apollo Crews will put the WWE Intercontinental Championship on the line against King Nakamura.

WWE SmackDown Results 08/13/2021

Another jam-packed crowd in Tulsa tonight. John Cena is out first to open the show. A recap of the Universal Championship contract signing from two weeks ago is shown. Cena begins by saying he’s giving Roman Reigns his report card and gives Reigns a D because Reigns is a D. Cena says his agenda for returning is to give Reigns an F at SummerSlam. Tulsa bursts out into a huge ‘Cena’ chant. Cena asks the WWE Universe if they think Roman Reigns will beat the hell out of him at SummerSlam. The crowd boo. Cena says Reigns will beat the hell out of him at SummerSlam, but Reigns will lose. Reigns’ music hits and ‘The Head of the Table’  with Paul Heyman makes his way out to come face-to-face with John Cena. SmackDown goes to an early commercial. When we return Reigns is stepping into the ring.

The crowd in Tulsa immediately chant ‘Roman sucks!’ before Paul Heyman hands Reigns the mic. Cena says he’s going to embarrass Reigns at SummerSlam. Reigns asked if that is it. Cena accuses Reigns of thinking SmackDown is a show, but he says the show belongs to the WWE Universe. Cena says he’s back because he’s the only one who can shut him up. Cena says WWE has been pushing Reigns for ten years and describes him as a failure after failure. Cena indicates WWE asked him to come back and hand Reigns some humble pie at SummerSlam.

Reigns says he wanted to hear something original and wants to hear something new from Cena. Cena mentions if he beats Reigns it will make him a 17-time world champion and he would make history. Cena says he’s here to help Reigns. Reigns respond by saying he respects Cena and plugs his legacy. Reigns says Cena is good and that he’s good enough to stand in the ring with the Tribal Chief. Reigns says Cena isn’t good enough to win the Universal Championship.

Reigns says twenty-plus years of missionary for Cena may be good enough for him, but it wasn’t for Nikki Bella. Reigns says he’s going to smash Cena and send him back to Hollywood. Cena says Reigns has been protected. Cena says he almost ruined Seth Rollins and drove Dean Ambrose out of WWE. Cena says SummerSlam will be compelling. Cena says Heyman knows how tough Cena can be. Cena proclaims Reigns is the biggest failure in WWE history.

Cena says all he needs is 1. 2. 3. and Reigns will end up being the answer to a trivia question about who did John Cena beat to win his 17th world championship. Cena says nobody can protect Reigns anymore and the champ is gone. 1. 2. 3. A great promo from John Cena. He definitely got the upper-hand on Reigns there. Bring on the HUGE SummerSlam main event between the two.

Backstage, King Nakamura and Boogs are shown dancing. The Intercontinental Championship is on the line next.

Apollo Crews w/ Commander Azeez vs. King Nakamura w/ Boogs for the WWE Intercontinental Championship

Apollo Crews takes early control of the match. Early in the match, Boogs begins to play his electric guitar on the apron. The referee then sends Boogs to the back. The referee then sends Commander Azeez to the back as he tries to get on the apron on the opposite side of the ring. The highlight of the match so far. Crews is still in control as we return from the commercial. Crews delivers a superplex from the top rope, with Nakamura kicking out at two. Nakamura gained some late momentum and delivers a Kinshasa finisher to become Intercontinental Champion for a second time. Pyro goes off in the background. Boogs and Pat McAfee are rocking out on the announce table. What a moment.

Winner: King Nakamura and new Intercontinental Champion

Backstage, Kayla Braxton is The Street Profits after they recapped The Street Profits’ last encounter with Otis and Chad Gable earlier this year. Montez Ford says he is rejuvenated and excited. Dawkins says Montez is his friend and brother. Dawkins and Montez, they are the smoke as they make their entrance as the red cups begin to fall.

The Street Profits vs. Alpha Academy (Otis & Chad Gable)

Montez Ford and Chad Gable start the match. This should be an outstanding encounter if they get enough time. Ford and Gable show off their athleticism. Otis tags in and dominates Ford, and then Dawkins gets tagged in. Otis looking impressive with his strength. Late in the match, Montez flew over the top rope to take out Otis, as Dawkins picks up the win in the middle of the ring with the pop-up corkscrew neck breaker.

Winner: The Street Profits

Backstage, Seth Rollins is in the production truck and is demanding something to be done. Seth Rollins is up next.

Seth Rollins makes his way to the ring and says that his sources tell him Edge isn’t here tonight. Rollins wishes Edge was here tonight as the fans begin to chant ‘We want Edge!’ Seth responds saying they got Edge-lite here tonight and laughs. Rollins says that Edge can’t stand the fact that his career has been a little bit better than his. Rollins says he has video proof with a video retrospective of his and Edge’s careers.

The video is one-sided in favor of making Rollins look better. The video ends by saying that Edge will always be beneath Seth Rollins. Rollins says he sees no lie as the fans begin to chant for Edge. Rollins says during the video he had a bit of revelation. He says that Edge should be thanking him and the WWE Universe should be thanking him. Rollins says none of Edge’s recent moments would have happened if Rollins had stomped him in 2014. The fans start to chant for Edge again which agitates Rollins. Rollins believes Edge is making him do and say things he doesn’t want to say. Rollins looks directly into the camera and says he will not hold back and will stomp his head into the ring mat. Rollins makes it clear if it puts Edge out for good then so be it. An intense and great promo from Seth Rollins to take this rivalry to another level.

Backstage, Dominik Mysterio and Rey Mysterio are talking. Rey says no mistakes tonight and tells Dominik not to be over-confident and to stay hungry. They both make their way to the ring, as they are in action next against Ziggler & Roode.

Dominik & Rey Mysterio vs. Dolph Ziggler & Bobby Roode

Ziggler and Roode take control of the earlier stages of the match before Rey makes a hot tag to his son Dominik Mysterio. Ziggler immediately puts a halt to Dominik’s momentum, before a quick manuever by Dominik puts Ziggler in place for a 619. The Uso’s then appear on the screen talking and distract the match. Dominik manages to roll up Roode and pick up the win after Rey told Dominik to focus, avoiding the distraction from The Uso’s.

Winner: The Mysterios

A recap is shown of Cena and Reigns’ confrontation from earlier in the show. Baron Corbin makes his way to the stage. Corbin appeared on Raw earlier this week. Up next is Baron Corbin’s final plea before he has to file for bankruptcy as we go to commercial. Corbin looks even rougher this week. Corbin asks the WWE Universe to provide him $1,000 each to help him. Corbin even has a card scanner with him for fans to scan their card to donate. Kevin Owens music then hits as he walks down to the ring. Corbin is unsure if his card scanner can use Canadian Credit Cards. Owens says Corbin needs to stop

this and stop embarrassing himself. Owens says Corbin is trying to use people’s sympathy to his advantage. Owens reminds Corbin of his plea for his $100,000 on Raw this past Monday. Corbin says he is not leaving this arena tonight unless Owens gives him a minimum of $1,000. Owens says he will give him the money as long as Corbin beats him. Owens says if he wins then Corbin has to stop begging people for help and he has to help himself. Corbin agrees. Corbin tries to provoke Owens and Owens stunners, Corbin. It’s all on the line for Corbin next. Before we get going, Sasha Banks is shown backstage and a recap of Sasha’s return two weeks ago hyping up tonight’s contract signing.

Kevin Owens vs. Baron Corbin – If Corbin wins, Owens will give him $1,000. If Corbin loses, he has to stop begging and help himself

Corbin starts the match still suffering the effects of the stunner delivered by Kevin Owens. Corbin goes for some quick roll-ups but Owens kicks out each time. Midway through the match, Owens superkicks Corbin and then delivers a cannonball, but Corbin kicks out of the cover. Corbin delivers a backdrop to Owens on the apron as we go to commercial. Late in the match, Kevin Owens rolls through and rolls up Corbin to win. Corbin put in a solid performance, but now he can no longer beg anymore. Owens then stunners Corbin after the match.

Winner: Kevin Owens

Backstage, SmackDown Women’s Champion, Bianca Belair, is playing hangman (I think) with Big E who is holding a whiteboard. The contract signing is up next.

Backstage after a commercial, Baron Corbin is shown walking through the backstage area. Kayla Braxton approaches him and asks him what is next. Corbin looks up and runs over to a desk which has Big E’s Money in the Bank briefcase on it and runs away with it. Corbin has the Money in the Bank briefcase!

In the ring, Sonya Deville is in the ring to mediate the SmackDown Women’s Championship contract signing for SummerSlam. She first introduces Sasha Banks. She then introduces the SmackDown Women’s Champion, Bianca Belair. Belair asks Sasha if she’s ready, or is she going to run away or backstab her again. Bianca calls Sasha petty and jealous. Bianca says if Sasha wanted her WrestleMania rematch she just had to ask. Sasha calls Bianca a bitch and questions how she expected her and Bianca to just be friends after what happened at WrestleMania. Sasha says before she signs the contract, she wants some witnesses.

Carmella comes to the stage, as does Zelina Vega. Sasha says she’s always two steps ahead of Bianca. Sasha signs and so does Bianca. Bianca then throws the contract at Sasha and then attacks Carmella and Zelina Vega. Belair realized it was a set-up. From behind, Sasha Banks delivers a backstabber and now the three women beat down on Bianca. Sasha continues the assault on top of the contract signing table. Sasha then holds up the SmackDown Women’s Championship, before choking Belair with her own braid. The same braid Sasha claims kept her out for months after Bianca used it on her at WrestleMania.

Overall, another great SmackDown, and an episode that has gotten us firmly up for SummerSlam in eight days’ time.
