With WWE making a shift in the type of talent the promotion looks to bring it, the definition of what a “top prospect” is within the company may change. Still, regardless of how that term is defined, Gable Steveson is an individual that the WWE could not afford to miss out on. The first step in the goal was achieved as news broke on Saturday that the Olympic gold medalist has signed with the WWE.

Saturday morning Steveson took to Twitter and put out a cryptic tweet that he’d signed a contract. Where? That wasn’t immediately revealed. It was known that not only the WWE, but the UFC was also attempting to court Steveson in some manner. An athlete at his level and with his big personality, Steveson has the potential to be a star sooner, rather than later. It would be the WWE that won out in the contest.

The Wrestling Observer reported that Steveson signed with the promotion, even meeting with WWE Chairman, Vince McMahon. Step one is done. WWE has their top athletic prospect, now is the time to build him into the star he’s capable of becoming.

Prior to signing Gable, WWE announced a new class of NXT signees that include Bobby Steveson, Gable’s brother who also has an amateur wrestling background at the University of Minnesota. The same University of Minnesota that featured Brock Lesnar and Shelton Benjamin on the roster. The blueprint is right there to build these individuals into top-quality talent, the same way they’ve done with so many names in the past. The Steveson brothers are both rookies to this but imagine the opportunity to learn directly under the likes of Lesnar, Benjamin, and Heyman.

Building crossover stars that transcend professional wrestling has long been a goal of the WWE. While it’s a challenge to obtain this goal because the company tends to get in its own way with booking and behind-the-scenes decisions, Gable Steveson is someone that can help break that cycle. Plus, he also has the potential to head over to MMA and make waves in that space, becoming an individual that can jump back and forth between industries.

Next. WWE is missing out on Toni Storm's star potential. dark

“Can’t miss” prospect is a term that is thrown around too often in professional sports. The idea of it is a false hope, but Gable Steveson is someone that the WWE can truly build into a generational star.
