It has been reported this week that WWE intends on holding a major pay-per-view across the pond in the United Kingdom in 2022.

Alex McCarthy of TalkSPORT has today revealed that Cardiff, Wales is the preferred location to hold the event. It is understood that WWE has their eyes on the Principality Stadium due to the retractable roof, which would combat the unpredictable UK summer weather.

The speculation is already suggesting that major pay-per-view will be SummerSlam. The event would mark the 30th anniversary of SummerSlam 1992 which took place at Wembley Stadium in London, England. That particular event saw the British Bulldog defeat Bret Hart in the main event to win the Intercontinental Championship. It is considered one of the greatest matches in WWE history.

The WWE last held a pay-per-view in the UK back in 2003 when they held Insurrextion in Newcastle, England. The event is well-remembered for the ‘Plane Ride From Hell’ which followed on the flight home back to the United States.

The company annually travels over to the UK, usually after WrestleMania and in the autumn, respectively, to record Raw and SmackDown.

Are the UK fans finally getting a major WWE pay-per-view after 18 years?

It has been a long long wait for fans in the UK. After years of calling for WrestleMania to come to European shores, prayers maybe answered in the form of SummerSlam. What an occasion it would be. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of one of the greatest SummerSlam’s ever would be spectacular. There isn’t any clear indication that SummerSlam will be the major pay-per-view event WWE will be holding, but all indicators would suggest the celebration of the historical event from 1992 makes perfect sense.

No doubt the weather in the UK can be temperamental, so the idea of having a retractable roof stadium would also make sense. Wembley sadly doesn’t have a closing roof if the weather was to affect the event. WWE do not want a repeat of after what happened in Tampa earlier this year for WrestleMania. Either way, there is a lot of excitement across the pond right now at the prospect of a huge showcase coming next year.
