AEW: Sammy Guevara was the right person to dethrone Miro
Sammy Guevara was the right person to dethrone Miro
Ever since Miro began his TNT Championship run back in May, the question was immediately raised of who would be the person to dethrone the self-proclaimed “Redeemer”.
Miro ran through a slew of credible challengers during his run, including stars like Dante Martin, Lance Archer, Evil Uno, and Eddie Kingston. He never wrestled unless it was a TNT Title match, thus making the title feel that important.
Despite losing the title to Sammy Guevara on last night’s Dynamite, Miro’s reign with the strap has to be considered a full-on success. Over 141 days, he defended the title on eight different occasions – averaging at least one defense every 18 days.
Despite all of the good that came out of Miro’s reign, Guevara was the right person to take the belt off of “God’s Favorite Champion”.
Before the main event of last night’s Dynamite, MJF had some words about the “pillars” of AEW’s future. He mentioned Darby Allin, Jungle Boy, Sammy Guevara, and himself as those pillars, but I couldn’t help but wonder – what exactly is Guevara’s signature singles win in the company?
Guevara didn’t really have a win that stood out as a defining moment, that was until he defeated Miro and became the TNT Champion later that night.
“The Spanish God” already seems to be laying the foundation for a successful title reign, as he accepted a Bobby Fish open challenge for next week’s Dynamite. If Guevara is taking the Allin/Rhodes route of opening the title up to any and all comers, there’s no doubt he’s going to flourish in that role.
Guevara is a fine promo and can develop a nice story within a match, which means a ton of fresh, interesting heel matchups await him. People like Andrade, Ethan Page, PAC, and Wardlow would provide some favorable and intriguing match-ups for Guevara throughout his title reign.
I’d also take advantage of the hot independent scene and maybe bring in some people like Effy, AJ Gray, etc.
Another reason that Guevara’s timing of his championship win was perfect is due to the impending return of Kip Sabian. If Sabian does return from his injury soon, he needs time to have a good, semi-lengthy storyline with Miro and the TNT title doesn’t need to be involved in that specific story.
Although some could argue that Miro’s reign with the title was maybe a bit shorter than expected, I enjoyed the “unexpected” aspect of the change and think it will most likely result in a positive for Guevara, Miro, and the company as a whole.
