The unfortunate news about Ring of Honor shuttering its doors left a lot in the wrestling industry understandably heartbroken. ROH was the place where so many people got their start that led to them becoming mainstays across the wrestling world. Questions are now bubbling about what will be next for those that were under ROH contract and everyone has their eyes on Jonathan Gresham. It’s a matter of time before he shows up somewhere but the dream match against Bryan Danielson is rightly at the forefront of many fans.

The idea of a Gresham versus Danielson super match isn’t new. Look back to an interview he did in March with Bleacher Report where he outright named Gresham at the top of his dream list.

“In Ring of Honor, there’s a guy named Jonathan Gresham,” Danielson said. “He’s fantastic. I’d love to wrestle Jonathan Gresham. There are all these great guys.”

Well, that great guy is considered one of the best names in professional wrestling today. Gresham is a multiple-time champion, including holding the ROH Pure Championship for 317 days and the tag titles with Jay Lethal for 441 days. Everywhere he goes, Gresham puts on a display of wrestling abilities that touches on all facets of the game. In a world of scripted violence, Gresham comes off with a level of believability that doesn’t always emanate from the biggest names in the profession.

And best believe that Gresham has been thinking about Danielson as well.

“The only person I haven’t been able to wrestle is of course, Bryan Danielson,” Gresham said to Inside the Ropes in August. “But now I feel like more than ever. If that match is important to fans. I want that match to happen only on an ROH show. I wouldn’t want to do that match for anybody else besides my company.”

Unfortunately, logistics isn’t going to allow that match to happen now with the status of ROH. Of course, the “Go to AEW” crew is loud and vocal with the idea of Gresham heading over to the promotion, but he would be a game-changing signing. Just like some of the other names AEW has brought in throughout 2021, Gresham would immediately raise the bar. Imagine him walking out for a face-to-face with Danielson leading to one of the biggest matches of the year. The sheer mention of it should create goosebumps.

And, if AEW genuinely wants to create an immediate impact and a new star in the business, Gresham should win that dream match in the middle of the ring, clean as a sheet.

Ring of Honor will always have a place in wrestling history, and there’s no telling where the biggest names from that company will show up next. If Gresham becomes a free agent that AEW picks up, then that dream match against Bryan Danielson should be the first order of business for everyone involved.
