There are some things in professional wrestling that just feel “right.” The New Day, Bryan Danielson putting on amazing wrestling matches, and stanning over Riho are a few examples. But at AEW Full Gear, wrestling fans will get an addition to that list in the form of CM Punk versus Eddie Kingston. It’s a match that we didn’t know we needed at this point. At least not until the quick and impactful build that started AEW Rampage.

The moment that Kingston walked into the frame, yelling at Punk who had a bewildered look on his face, it was clear that this feud was kicking off. That was on October 29, a mere two weeks before Saturday’s PPV. Yet, AEW has done an excellent job with all the storytelling and development around this angle, once again proving that this promotion is the best when it comes to telling quality stories.

Punk and Kingston are the perfect foils for one another. Punk’s return was the biggest story in wrestling in 2021. Seeing him walk through the curtain each show is still a remarkable sight and his matches have delivered along the way. While Danielson’s end game is to put on the greatest matches possible, it’s still not clear what Punk’s final goal may be. But crossing paths with Kingston has put him in the crosshairs of one of AEW’s biggest darlings.

The moment Kingston walked out onto the stage to confront Cody Rhodes back in 2020, AEW had a star on its hands. Kingston may be the proverbial “glue guy” on the AEW roster; an individual that’s needed to bring home a championship. Danielson questioned Kingston’s heart and determination as a pro wrestling and Punk echoed that sentiment. That caused the chip on Kingston’s shoulder to grow into a boulder the size of Texas.

The storytelling here has been simple. But the promo package that AEW revealed this week sent everything over the top. In many ways, it felt akin to the packages that are put together by major networks like Showtime or the UFC heading into a big title fight. But for these two, there doesn’t need to be a title on the line. This is just an unadulterated fight between two men who can’t stand each other and that is more than enough.

There’s a lot to look forward to with AEW Full Gear. Fans should be excited to watch the show from start to finish. CM Punk versus Eddie Kingston may not be the main event, but it feels every bit as big as Kenny Omega versus Adam Page. When we look back months and years down the line, this may be the match that everyone remembers the most.
