Kevin Owens on why he re-signed with WWE and more on his new contract
On Wednesday news broke that Kevin Owens has re-signed with the WWE. Thursday, more details on that deal, and Owens himself provided context on his decision to come back to the WWE.
Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio reported that Owens’ new deal is a three-year contract worth what he reported to be worth $2-3 million dollars per year and was recently signed.
Along with Meltzer’s comments, Owens appeared on “Les Anti-Pods De La Lutte,” a podcast with WWE French-language commentator Pat Laprade and commented about why he made his decision.
“I will still be in WWE for several years, the decision was pretty easy because it was the best thing for my family, really. When it comes to that, it’s always a pretty easy decision to make. WWE has been my home for seven years now, so I have a sense of belonging.”
Owens was one of three big names that are either in or heading to a big free agency pool. Johnny Gargano is now a free agent and Kyle O’Reilly’s contract status is currently unknown. Both men last appeared on WWE NXT after NXT WarGames and were effectively written off the show.
Fightful Select further reported that Owens is well respected in the locker room, and was even called a “good moral compass,” for the company.
“Basically, I spent the majority of my career here. When you look at all the wrestling companies I’ve wrestled for, in WWE, that’s where I’ve been the longest,” Owens said on the podcast. “That’s where I need to be for the next few years. That’s how I felt and that’s the decision I made.”
Owens is currently in a major storyline on WWE Monday Night Raw where he’s set to challenge Big E in at WWE Day 1 for the WWE Championship. This is a fatal four-way match that includes Bobby Lashley and Seth Rollins. That match is set for January 1 at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
