Drew McIntyre is set up for a potential absence due to injury, as reported by Fightful Select.

Fightful has learned that the angle used during the WWE Day 1 PPV is an angle meant to cover up for a real injury to McIntyre. According to the report, this is an injury he’s been dealing with for a while and is prepared to be seen and treated. The exact injury has not been reported nor a potential timetable for a return.

After McIntyre’s victory over Madcap Moss, the former champion was attacked backstage by Moss and Happy Corbin. WWE then tweeted that “McIntyre suffered a cervical neck strain with severe contusions. Upon further evaluation by medical staff, he will have a follow-up with an orthopedic cervical specialist.”

Drew McIntyre was seen as the next top contender for WWE Universal Champion, Roman Reigns or Brock Lesnar, but those plans were thrown for a complete loop. Reigns was forced out of the PPV due to a positive COVID-19 test and Lesnar went on to become the WWE Champion when he defeated Big E, Bobby Lashley, Kevin Owens, and Seth Rollins in a five-way match in the main event.
