It’s a new year but the WWE releases have not stopped. Multiple backstage names were released from the NXT brand on Wednesday.

Road Dogg, Ace Steel, Ryan Katz, and William Regal were all released according to multiple reports across wrestling media. Many of these releases are seen as remnants of the original iteration of NXT that has since been supplanted by WWE NXT 2.0.

Road Dogg is best known as a member of the iconic stable, D-X. Since his time in the ring with the WWE ended, he’s been a key behind-the-scenes player. He spent time as a producer on SmackDown and served in a position at the WWE Performance Center.

Regal is another recognizable name on this list for his time in the ring but more recently as the main on-air authority figure for NXT. Not only did he play the General Manager role on television, but he was also the company’s Director of Talent Development and Head of Global Recruiting. Regal was last seen in an on-screen angle that brought Samoa Joe back to NXT to take on Karrion Kross, but after leaving the famed NXT parking lot he was not seen again since the relaunch of the brand.

According to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, WWE issued a brief statement regarding the cuts.

“With the continued evolution of NXT 2.0, we’ve decided to part ways with some of the staff based in our Performance Center. We thank them for their many contributions throughout the years and wish them the best.”
