Mustafa Ali requested his release from the WWE, but Fightful Select reported on Thursday that the promotion will not grant his release.

According to the report, WWE and Ali conversed since the request was made public by Ali on Monday via social media. As stated, granting the release “as of now isn’t the plan.” Ali has not been on WWE television since October when he was defeated by Drew McIntyre on WWE SmackDown. He has also not been at tapings in that stretch of time.

No specifics were provided as why the release wasn’t granted, although Fightful was informed that the term “value” was used in discussions.

“I have a message that is much bigger than my dreams in pro wrestling,” Ali posted on social media on Monday. “Despite my best efforts, I will not be able to deliver this message while working with the WWE. Therefore, I am requesting my release from the WWE.”

Ali has been a beloved figure during his time with the company that started back in 2016 as an alternate in the Cruiserweight Classic tournament. That led to him being signed with the company and joining the 205-pound division. From there he would have several great matches in the company, including a series of bouts against Buddy Murphy for the Cruiserweight Championship.

Ali requested his release at a time when WWE continues to cut performers from the roster. Most recently, Toni Storm requested her release and had it granted.
