Serena Deeb is heading for a career-defining run in AEW
Serena Deeb is on a career-defining run in All Elite Wrestling. It’s the type of run that should elevate her to a championship sooner, rather than later.
Deeb has been on a tear since returning from a knee injury back in October. Her focus allowed her to burn through a rivalry with former AEW Women’s World Champion, Hikaru Shida, effectively squashing Shida in their last match in January in under two minutes. Skye Blue was next, suffering a similar fate in under three minutes the next week.
Now is the time to push Deeb into another major feud that can lead to an opportunity at a title, but the question is how does AEW get there? Regardless of how that occurs, watching Deeb embrace his straightforward mentality on-screen is making her an enjoyable character to watch, even if she’s portraying more reality than character.
“Honestly, a lot of what’s coming out of me right now, character-wise and personality-wise is real,” Deeb said while on Tuesday Wrestling Tuesday with Jonathan Hood. “A lot of my content right now is very real, it’s real emotion coming out. You guys don’t even know. I’m not saying this with bitterness at all, I’m very proud of my journey and grateful for the struggles that I went through.”
If that bitterness is seeping through into her matches, then it’s working as Deeb looks like a world-beater. The question is where can she go next to continue a consistent build toward the title?
Jade Cargill is establishing herself as a champion, and there doesn’t seem to be any end to her growing momentum. Even though Britt Baker’s title run seems to be stalling, she should be looking over her shoulder for a match against Thunder Rosa, the bout everyone wants to see main event an AEW PPV. Deeb versus Rosa would be massive, but again, Rosa should be heading toward a title run of her own so it would be hard to cut the push of either woman. Kris Statlander is heading for a showdown with Leyla Hirsch.
Deeb targeting Tay Conti and Anna Jay would be a way to keep her in an angle that’s consistently booked on television. Especially as they come off their angle with Penelope Ford and The Bunny. The key term is “consistently booked on television” as that has been a problem for AEW when it comes to much of their women’s division.
Serena Deeb is heading for a run that should see her end up with gold around her waist. She’s a talent that can lift the entire women’s division along the way. Let’s hope AEW takes advantage of such a talented performer on the roster.
