It has been almost a few weeks since Cody Rhodes made his return to WWE. Some fans of AEW expressed gratitude while others were angry. WWE fans have had a majority expressing happiness for his return. With such a divide in the wrestling community, a moment like this can be defined purely by the emotions of different fans.

However, Cody returning to WWE shouldn’t be looked at from the emotions of fans. It shouldn’t even be looked at as solely a bridge between AEW and WWE. The comeback of Cody has historical implications for his career to correct everything that happened during his original run in WWE.

Cody Rhodes and his first run in WWE.

Cody tried to find his footing and build a legacy of his own. After some tag team titles, rivalries, and even some Wrestlemania moments, Cody had a sudden burst of momentum on his side. During that time, he had a gradual rise that hit a climax before a surprising decline before his release from WWE.

After building a legacy and winning tag team gold with various rivalries, Cody brought back the old-school intercontinental championship in 2011. It was an underrated monumental moment and Cody established himself as a prominent name associated with the intercontinental title.

The rivalry between him and Rey Mysterio will forever be remembered as a landmark in helping fans see Cody in a different way. Cody removed himself from the shadow of Legacy and he was on the fast track with momentum on his side.

After he lost the Intercontinental title, his momentum was still in full swing as he had many shots to regain the title again. It did nothing to hurt him coming up short, fans had expectations of more for Cody.

That brings us to his alliance with Damien Sandow as Rhodes Scholars. The team continued to come up short for tag team gold, but Cody’s popularity continued to grow to new heights. The two superstars remained a threat in WWE for both singles and tag team titles.

The peculiar factor was the fact Cody’s popularity surpassed Damien Sandow, who also was very popular with fans. It became apparent during this alliance that there was so much more there for Cody. Both stars became the underdog with no world titles under their belt but were hot prospects due to their ability.

It all accumulated to Money in the Bank in 2013, when Cody came in the pay-per-view absolutely on fire. He participated in the Money in the Bank match along with Damien Sandow in one of the biggest Money in the Bank matches ever.

Cody came in busting out moves that were rarely seen from him. He was in high spirits with all momentum seemingly on his side, and the crowd knew something special was about to happen that night. When it seemed like Cody was ready to pave the way for a future world title, he had it all yanked away as Damien Sandow won it.

Sometime after, Cody found himself paired with his brother Goldust as they found themselves in an emotional rivalry against the Authority. They eventually won the tag team titles together and continued to take on the best teams WWE had to offer until they eventually lost to the legendary New Age Outlaws.

Things started to look and feel different for Cody Rhodes. This led to a moment where Cody tried to pair Goldust up with various partners. A sharp contrast to the heavy momentum he had during Money in the Bank in 2013, now Cody seemed to have lost all momentum by this point.

Eventually, Cody was reintroduced as the infamous Stardust, which was a far cry from his Dashing Cody Rhodes time. He had another tag team title reign with his brother Goldust, but that’s as far as things went when it came to the Stardust reign.

Long after the tag team title, Cody was seemingly stuck in Stardust and the sand was sinking quickly as it seemed with no sign of Cody Rhodes coming back. Cody eventually left WWE and it seemed to be the only way for Stardust to finally end.

Cody is 36 years old and is presented with a great opportunity to make it all happen on his terms after a barrage of accomplishments from the NWA world title to being Instrumental in the whole success of AEW.

After the ultimate reinvention, he’s presented with an opportunity that makes his return different from Drew McIntyre, EC3, or even the almighty Bobby Lashley. While those superstars were all able to reinvent themselves to become popular stars or world champions, Cody took it a step further.

Cody proved that he is capable of being trusted creatively and he’s able to take a little something and turn it into something bigger. AEW started off as an idea after a thunderous wrestling event that many fans called a one-time deal.

Innovation and creativity are something that is worth everything if a superstar knows how to do it, and Cody is not the same guy anymore he took it and built himself up even more.
