AEW Double Or Nothing 2022: Full match card and predicitons
MJF vs Wardlow
The build for this matchup has been masterful. After two and a half of years taking verbal abuse and taking orders from MJF, Wardlow snapped. He handed CM Punk the diamond ring of MJF to aid in the victory for Punk at AEW Revolution.
Some of the recent events have been recycled, yet very entertaining. Wardlow receiving ten lashes from MJF and Shawn Spears, laughing off most of them before being hit below the belt. Then Wardlow faced off with Spears as MJF was the special guest referee. Wardlow prevailed after Spears mauled MJF with a chair. Allowing Wardlow to powerbomb Spears multiple times and a new ref would count the three.
Wardlow’s music was taken away, he was barred from most arenas. If he was to step foot into the building, he would have to be escorted by security in handcuffs. These added stipulations to go along with the powerbomb symphony have really boosted Wardlow’s stock.
Most folks fully expect Wardlow to via massacre in this bout. Yet each and every time MJF is counted out, he finds a way to eke out a victory with the aid of cheating via weapon or other chicanery. He’s a master escape artist and I fully anticipate him being the next AEW champion some time down the road.
Who he takes it from will be determined in the main event.
Winner: MJF
Hangman Page vs CM Punk for the AEW World championship
This will be a tremendous main event. The AEW world champion Hangman Page has had incredible title defenses since winning the title at Full Gear in November. His confidence hit an all-time high after defeating Bryan Danielson early in 2022.
In the meantime, we have CM Punk who has overcome every obstacle on his way to becoming the number one contender for the title. Another contrast in styles here as Page is well rounded, younger and more athletic. While Punk has become even more cerebral and calculated as he shook off the ring rust after seven plus years of inactivity.
The feather in the cap of Page winning this match would cement his legacy as the greatest AEW champion of the promotion’s history. Classic matches with Danielson, Lance Archer and Adam Cole would precede a career changing win over CM Punk. You can call the build of Hangman Page’s as “stale” thus far from a story perspective, but the in-ring work says otherwise. There is more juice left in his title run if he walks out victorious.
You can also build a tremendous case for Punk winning the AEW World title. He’s the most over act in the promotion, he’s wrestling very well right now and his top tier promos remain in the hierarchy of pro wrestling. Add that the AEW/NJPW Forbidden Door pay per view next month is in the hometown of Punk (Chicago, Illinois) and you can see the writing on the wall that AEW is ready to crown a new champion at Double Or Nothing.
This is the toughest match to predict on the card. Hangman Page can see that if Punk does in fact win the AEW world championship, that the locker room will find out who he ‘truly is’. Referring to his previous world title conquests in other promotion.
We could see another “Summer Of Punk” with pipe bombs, an edgier attitude and potentially a heel who just so happens to be a snake and will backstab folks on his way to the top of the mountain.
I really believe the correct call would be Hangman Page winning the match and his star shining that much more. Yet the likely move is a new World champion with back-to-back pay per views in his hometown and a lot of intriguing stories to tell along the way.
