WWE Hell in a Cell is another ‘premium’ live event lacking excitement
WWE Hell in a Cell is a few short days away, and the event card isn’t causing the waves that one would expect from a live premium event. Six matches are planned, with the expectation of others to come, but even with that pending this card is yet another example of the growing trend of lackadaisical booking. Hell in the Cell is an event that WWE viewers could skip and not miss a beat in the WWE Universe.
What is the match on this card that is meant to grab fans’ attention, compelling them to tune in? Right now, there isn’t one. With Roman Reigns not advertised for the card, the company’s top championships will miss the show entirely. Ronda Rousey doesn’t have any strong competition, and she’s not slated, nor is Ricochet’s Intercontinental championship.
SmackDown as a whole isn’t represented on the card. That should change with this week’s show, but it’s telling that with less than a week until the premium live event an entire brand is almost forgotten.
Nearly six months into 2022, the offerings that WWE has put together for PPVs have been less than desired. With each passing show, it seems like there is less effort put into building something new and engaging that will get fans on board to watch.
As always, the performers involved will excel in their craft. Seth Rollins versus Cody Rhodes in a Hell in a Cell will be a great match. Excitement is high to see Bianca Belair defend against Asuka and Becky Lynch. But these athletes are continuing to carry all the load with less effort going into the creative direction that brings eyeballs to these events.
AEW Double or Nothing was a long show, but there were a lot of different ways fans were invested in the card. Matches like Thunder Rosa versus Serena Deeb, “Hangman” Adam Page versus CM Punk, and others were enough to get fans locked into watching. That same type of excitement isn’t readily presented about Hell in a Cell. That falls entirely on the WWE.
Just like WrestleMania Backlash, there is a glaring lack of effort shown in putting together WWE’s “premium” live events. Money in the Bank is already suffering from a lack of interest as that show is now going to a smaller venue. With that and SummerSlam on the horizon, WWE continuing to put together shows that fans can skip will catch up with them.
