WWE NXT continues to be the place where the next generation of WWE stars is crafted. The verdict on its success in that space is still out, but it’s also well-served as the place where main roster names can go back for an opportunity to refresh themselves. Dolph Ziggler and Natalya have done recent stints and Apollo Crews made a surprise appearance this week. This was a welcome surprise because Crews needed something to remind fans how good of a talent he is for the WWE.

Crews made a surprise entrance walking back into NXT as the current champion, Bron Breakker, demanded to know what is next for his time at the top. Crews didn’t jump into an immediate conversation about challenging for the belt, but he let it be known that he’s willing to work his way back to that title. This is the right call because it gives fans the opportunity to see some great matches from Crews, sparking those memories of his initial run on the black and yellow brand.

From 2015-2016 Crews was a welcome addition to the NXT brand. During that time, he was having strong matches, but never reached the point of being the NXT Champion. When he was called up to the main roster in 2016, it felt rushed. Yes, he reached both the United States and Intercontinental championships, but he always felt out of place on the main roster. Then came the controversial gimmick where he broke out a Nigerian accent that was talked about heavily online but didn’t keep him on television for long.

Being back in NXT, for what will be hopefully a long run, creates the opportunity for some great matches. Imagine Crews against the likes of Carmelo Hayes, Nathan Frazer, A-Kid, Fabian Aichner, and many others. Not only are these showcase matches for the young members of the roster, but they are matches that can help remind fans that Crews is one of the best workers on the roster. WWE NXT matches are consistently better than much of what is presented on the main roster, so giving Crews the chance to showcase his skills helps everyone around.

Moving main roster performers back to WWE NXT is a breath of fresh air. Dolph Ziggler’s run is the best example of such and now that Apollo Crews is back, he can find similar success; lighting a fire under his WWE run and reminding everyone who was a fan why they fell in love with his in-ring abilities.
