Making A Case: Why AEW Needs Secondary Tag Team Championships

We have to say congrats to The Young Bucks for becoming the first-ever two-time AEW Tag Team Champions. However, there are plenty of teams wanting a shot at gold. Maybe it’s time to create more titles to win.

It comes as no surprise to any fan of All Elite Wrestling that the company has one of the most stacked rosters in the business. Over the past few years, Tony Khan has accumulated a list of talent that includes wrestling legends, future stars, and some of the biggest names currently wrestling in AEW. The company has done a decent job by adding championships to the men’s and women’s singles divisions to give more opportunities for everybody. There are currently five sanctioned singles titles with the FTW being six if it was a sanctioned championship.

However, if you are a tag team in AEW, you don’t have as many options. Besides the tag team championships from other brands sometimes being defended, the AEW Tag Team Championships are the only titles for AEW teams to win and represent the company. While it does help by having FTR, the reigning ROH World Tag Team Champions, bringing the titles to AEW, and defending them on AEW programming, it’s benefiting the wrong one of Tony Khan’s companies. While it may be a good decision for Tony to have his companies help each other, AEW needs more representation.

While they have done well in their first few years, the company still needs championships with their name on them. They have taken the wrestling world by storm but you are still looking for new viewers every week. They still need to get the name All Elite Wrestling out in the world as much as possible. While wrestling fans can appreciate championships from other companies being shown and defended on AEW. Think about a potential first-time viewer, you wouldn’t want a fan to tune in for the very first time during the wrong match or segment.

While you are trying to help each other out, there is a chance you can help one more than the other. As an example, you wouldn’t want a fan’s first memory of an All Elite Wrestling show being Christian Cage winning the Impact World Championship, especially on the debut episode of an AEW show. There’s nothing wrong with the moment happening on AEW and you could hear the fans had no issue with the moment. However, it could make Impact Wrestling look better than All Elite Wrestling for a first-time viewer to see the top guy be defeated. Then the potential fan may check in to see Impact next week instead of trying the other company again.

With that ramble over with, instead of focusing on showcasing the ROH Tag Championships, AEW needs to introduce new secondary tag team championships. Over the past year or longer, there have been rumors of All Elite Wrestling introducing a new trios championship. While that would be ideal for a few teams, that would still leave many tag teams out of the loop. Especially when the AEW Trios Championships get caught between Adam Cole and reDRagon and Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks for a year. While I believe the trio’s championships would work, they would still need more to satisfy the other tag teams.

Teams like The Gunn Club, The House of Black, and The Death Triangle are all names you can toss into contention for a trios championship. However, there are plenty of two-man teams that would love some more gold for them to fight for as well. The AEW Trio Tag Championships are a great idea and should be created in my opinion. Although, they need to be announced with new secondary tag titles to go with them. There are plenty of teams that could fight for the new tag titles while both the main tag titles and the trio tag titles both have competition.

There are teams in AEW that haven’t had many shots to make their name. Take a team like The Varsity Blondes that have been around AEW for a while and only had one chance to fight for the gold. Then of course there are the “Ass Boys” Austin and Colten Gunn, who have won a majority of their matches but have never had a chance to fight for the AEW Tag Team Championships. There are plenty of teams that could be listed and explained why they deserve a title shot from The Acclaimed to the newly created team of Hook and Danhausen.

The AEW roster is so stacked with talent that introducing two new championships, five new title belts won’t hurt the AEW World Tag Team Championships at all. It would be ideal to not bring in the titles at the same time. I would bring in the secondary tag team championships first and get them established before introducing the trio’s tag team titles. AEW could potentially build up to two entertaining tournaments for both of these championships if they decide to make both of them a reality. However, with only one rumored, I hope that AEW introduces secondary tag team titles before a trios title.
