The funniest wrestlers in the business prove that wrestling does not have to take itself so seriously. While most of us are well versed in the comedic stylings of Colt Cabana, Orange Cassidy, and Danhausen, there are some rare gems on the indie circuit that deserve the title of the funniest wrestler.

1. Dan the Dad

Dan the Dad has participated in Future Stars of Wrestling, Wrestling Revolver, and Alpha-1. His gimmick is that he is a full-time dad with sensible notions, a tight schedule, and a need for organization. It is not unusual to hear him tell a dad joke or to tell his opponent that he has “had it up to here with your shenanigans.” When he wins a title he puts it in a baby sling that he holds over his shoulder.

2. Mei Suruga

Japanese female wrestling (Joshi) has the funniest comedians in the business. In the US, females are not known to be comedic in their wrestling (and it’s a shame), but that is not the case with Mei Suruga. Mei is a living anime character. She dresses like a French maid, falls on her face like a cartoon character, and will interrupt a submission to wave to her tag partner. In one bit she cleverly hit her opponent with a serving tray several times, while hiding it behind her so the ref wouldn’t be able to see it. You can catch her on Gatoh Move and Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling.

3. Hyper Misao

Hyper Misao is a superhero and of the funniest wrestlers I have ever seen. She is pure fun to watch as she struts around like a vigilante saving the day. The fact that she refers to the audience as big children is worth its weight in comedic gold. She has a Hypermobile which she tries to ram into other wrestlers (most of the time ending in disaster). You can catch her on Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling.

4. The Colony

Unfortunately, Chikara is not around anymore, but the franchise produced some of the funniest wrestlers in the business. The most notable is The Colony, a group of different ants that work together to form a stable. Fire Ant, Arctic Ant, Soldier Ant, and others worked to perform wordless comedy and acrobatics. In one match they were marching to the ring and their music stopped so the ants paused at the entrance until their music started again. In their match with the Young Bucks, they quickly become a force of irritation with their signature salute taunt.

5.  Aaron Stevens

Aaron Stevens, aka Damien Sandow and Aron Rex, is the perfect example of a wrestler having a successful comedy career. His role in the NWA skyrocketed his comedy bits to a whole new level. He started in the NWA as a pretentious actor who had “more acting chops than Ric Flair.” He won the United States Championship by hiding behind a bush in a triple threat match. He was a karate disciple of the late great Question Mark. Aron is a comedy heel whose purpose is to make the baby face look competent, while he tries cartoony antics.

6. Ava Everett

Ava Everett isn’t necessarily a comedic wrestler, but she takes the tough powerhouse wrestler persona to a hilarious level. She is clearly a featherweight against her intergender matches, but she carries herself like The Undertaker. The way she powers up before a vicious move or how she springs up in anger after taking a bump is fun. She is pure entertainment to watch and she has put on some hilarious matches with Anthony Greene.

That is my list of funniest wrestlers. Did I miss any?
