The black and gold main WWE roster era is in full effect. With HHH in charge, fans have seen familiar faces return, and more emphasis on the action inside the squared circle. Another area that could use renovation is its tag-teams division, which has long been neglected under Vince McMahon.

Five Tag Teams to create to restore the division

The Usos, like their cousin, hold all of the gold with very little in their way of challengers. The obvious resolution is to split the belts to create more parity across the board. That could still create issues with Smackdown currently having all the tag teams. The current tag teams to date are the Usos, New Day, Street Profits, Alpha Academy, Viking Raiders, Los Letharios, *Maximum Male Models, and the returning Hit Row respectively. Here are five teams curated for the eventual split of the tag team titles.

Ali and Cedric Alexander

Two pillars of the 205 Live brand that have been far underutilized in recent years with start and stop pushes (See Retribution). We’ve received a small sample size of the two as a tag team on Raw and the experiment should continue. Many might not recall the brief run Cedric Alexander and Ricochet had as a team years ago, that if anything provided exciting spots. This would be a creative way to get both superstars more exposure while adding a high-flying layer to the division.

Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayes

There are so many dream matches for Melo one could conjure up for his main roster run. But he could get acclimated to the environment as a tag team specialist. The promos with these two alone would make weekly segments fun. Then of course the occasional singles match where Melo and let’s say a Montez Ford could excel for 20 minutes.

There’s absolutely a long play with Carmelo Hayes based on the way he’s currently booked. A great short play where all parties win with a call-up of him and Williams. Once Melo finishes a North American title program with Solo Sikoa, he can look toward his brothers for more smoke.

Stevenson Bros.

Gable Stevenson hasn’t been seen in WWE since night one of Wrestlemania. Meanwhile, Damon Kemp seems like filler for Diamond Mine and taking a backseat to the Creed Brothers. This is a very simple pairing that just makes sense and would help elevate both superstars in a quick fashion.

The pairing of the two brothers can be a true homage to the Steiner Brothers, and also achieve heights tag teams like American Alpha never achieved on the main roster. It’s no secret WWE views Gable as a future star, using him in a tag team is a wise way to get him over with the audience instead of shooting him straight to the top of the card.

Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn

First and foremost this is long overdue, and a legit tag team run is something both superstars have lobbied for. The on-screen pairing of Owens and Zayn always over-delivers as adversaries or comrades. With Kevin Owens notably returning to his roots, he can wake up his best friend from his current status as a Bloodline door mat. Then as a tandem, they can look to overthrow the current undisputed tag team champions.

The Owens vs Reigns rivalry had a ton of great matches and Owens could look to revisit taking down the Bloodline with his best friend. The tease of tension between Zayn and Jey Uso could be the start of something beautiful.

DIY

Everyone loves a good nostalgia moment, and now there’s no wondering about where Johnny Gargano will sign because he’s back in the WWE. While Ciampa and Gargano have one of if not the most storied rivalries in NXT, they gained fanfare as a unit with DIY. One could argue DIY would be the most exciting challenge the Usos have had on their historic title reign. Also, a DIY reunion would easily reignite the entire tag team division and fast-track familiarity with Ciampa and Gargano.

That’s not to say the Miz pairing hasn’t elevated Ciampa, it absolutely has. But the colorful Ciampa fans are witnessing is a far cry from the Blackheart that fans of NXT black and gold love. With Gargano back, he can remind Ciampa of his roots as a former leader of NXT and reunite for a run at the undisputed tag team titles. The Usos and DIY could absolutely main event a future premium live event.
