Brian Cage is an interesting potential free agent for major promotions
If Brian Cage becomes a free agent it will be intriguing to see what major company brings him into the fold.
Free agency in professional wrestling is always an intriguing concept. News broke on Tuesday that Brian Cage’s contract is set to end soon, as reported by Fightful Select. Cage is an interesting name to potentially enter the free agency space as he’s had a perplexing run in AEW, but the company made moves to keep him in the fold. If he becomes a free agent each of the major organizations could see value in making a play for his talents.
According to the report from Fightful Select, as of January 24, Cage’s contract is set to expire “in a matter of weeks.” This comes after AEW opted to pick up his option last year before his deal was over. This was surprising to many as he was used sparingly throughout the year. When he returned to AEW television later in the year he put on what many considered to be some of his best work – including an exciting match with Wardlow for the AEW TNT Championship on the October 5 edition of AEW Dynamite.
Currently, Cage is one-third of the Ring of Honor Six-Man Tag Team Champions with Kaun and Toa Liona.
According to the Fightful “feelers within WWE gauged the company’s interest in bringing Cage in,” but the report did not mention specific interest on either side.
Brian Cage could fit in any major wrestling promotion
One could easily see Cage fitting in on a roster within major organizations like WWE or New Japan Pro Wrestling. It would also be understood if Tony Khan makes a play to keep him under the AEW/ROH banner. Cage is 38 years old which isn’t exceptionally old in professional wrestling terms, but he is at the higher end of the scale. That could be a challenge for him in AEW where younger names are continuing to push their way higher up the card.
Many wondered where Cage fit in the promotion, even before his absence from television. Fitting him under ROH and putting him in the Embassy was looked at as an opportunity to rebuild him into a threat. That could still be the case if he stays in the company.
It is hard to tell where Cage would fit if he was a part of the WWE roster. Would he have a quick push based on his look and in-ring abilities alone, sure – but there are plenty of examples of wrestlers that couldn’t keep that sustained momentum due to the promotion’s booking practices. Would it be interesting to see Cage against the likes of Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, Bron Breakker, AJ Styles, and others? Certainly. Seeing him rebuild another feud with Bobby Lashley could be fun as well. But it is hard to see him as a main event-level talent in this iteration of the company.
New Japan tends to do a great job building foreign names in their promotion. That is why many were surprised that JONAH/Bronson Reed decided to go back to WWE after picking up a major win over Kazuchika Okada in 2022. Could Cage come into NJPW and be a big threat as a heel character? Potentially, but just as with WWE it is hard to see the company elevating him to the top of the card.
Brian Cage is a talented performer in professional wrestling and would fit on the roster for any major promotion. It will be interesting to see where he winds up, if his time with AEW is over or if the company opts to re-sign him before his contract comes to an end.
