AEX x NJPW Forbidden Door II is set and after an amazing inaugural edition, fans are looking for major dream matches in 2023.

Forbidden Door II might be over two months away, but that does not stop wrestling fans from dreaming of matches that can only happen with such an event. AEW and New Japan’s massive pay-per-view crossover has led to one of the most successful pay-per-views of last year and should garner the same amount of praise if not more this year.

With such a stacked roster like AEW and New Japan, there are countless dream matches that have the potential to take place in Canada this year. Here are five matches that must happen for Forbidden Door II.

Sammy Guevara vs. Hiromu Takahashi

Sammy Guevara is a wrestler that would thrive in New Japan. His high-flying style would be perfect for the junior heavyweight division, and Hiromu Takahashi has held that division down better than anyone in the last decade arguably. Takahashi regained his Junior Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom, and Sammy Guevara would be the perfect opponent to give him a real shot at losing the title or just a phenomenal one-off match.

Guevara is in a feud right now for the AEW World Championship, but if he is unable to claim the title from MJF, an incredible match with Takahashi would be the perfect consolation prize for Forbidden Door II. Guevara and Takahashicould perform some of the most death-defying spots and an incredible amount of flips that one match could contain.

Bryan Danielson versus Zack Sabre Jr

Bryan Danielson is many fans’ choice as the greatest technical wrestler of all time. The wrestler that is currently rivaling his stature as the best technical wrestler in the world is New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Zack Sabre Jr. This match was supposed to happen last year, before Danielson was unable to get cleared from an injury, and was replaced by Claudio Castagnoli.

One year later and the anticipation for this match is only higher. This match has been a dream match for wrestling fans for over a decade now, and this looks like the best shot of fans finally getting a match that has been in the making for so long.

Mercedes Mone vs. Jade Cargill

Mercedes Mone has proven with her time in New Japan and Stardom that she is easily in the argument for the best women’s wrestler in the world right now. She is the star power that the AEW women’s division desperately needs, and she is the true challenge that somebody like Jade Cargill desperately needs.

Cargill is still undefeated, as her unbeaten streak seems almost impossible to ruin, but Mercedes Mone is the kind of star that can finally take the TBS Championship off of Cargill, and lead the title into its next lineage. This would be a matchup of two of the biggest female star in wrestling, and be one of the biggest money matches that AEW or New Japan could put on.

Kenny Omega vs. Will Ospreay

One of the most obvious choices is rehashing Kenny Omega versus Will Ospreay. Omega and Ospreay had arguably the best match of 2023 so far, at Wrestle Kingdom this year. However, that match left Ospreay with a loss to Omega, and it doesn’t seem as though the story is finished.

This would be the perfect setup for Omega versus Ospreay in Canada, where Ospreay can overcome Omega in his hometown. If there is one match that will likely happen at Forbidden Door II, it is Omega and Ospreay, possibly writing another chapter on a historic rivalry.

MJF vs. Kazuchika Okada

MJF versus Kazuchika Okada is the biggest money match that AEW and New Japan could put on. MJF is AEW’s biggest star at the moment, while Okada has been New Japan’s biggest star for years now. MJF has gone on record, unclear whether it is playful or not, that he has no desire to work in New Japan. MJF even made sure to mention Okada when talking about his dislike of New Japan and his frustration with the PWI 500 having Okada so high in his interview with Ariel Helwani on “The MMA Hour“, stating “Okada No. 2? Is that what it was with PWI 500? I don’t think I’ve heard that guy’s name since 2014.”

It seems as though this would be the perfect setup for MJF versus Okada at Forbidden Door II, giving MJF one of the biggest tests of his career.
