The top three moments from WWE Backlash 2023
WWE Backlash 2023 featured many big moments that fans will remember.
The first premium live event post Wrestlemania has commenced, and we finally have some more clarity on what lies ahead for Summer programming. WWE Backlash absolutely set the bar for any event that succeeds it. Top to bottom of the card delivered inside the ring with the backing of a raucous crowd from start to finish.
These three moments defined WWE Backlash
With the draft results set to go into effect Monday, WWE Backlash could have been the final time for particular rivalries. As well with the visual success of Backlash one has to believe a blueprint has been set on where premium live events should be hosted. Here are the top three moments of WWE Backlash.
The Crowd
Not much of a moment but a foundational piece to the event. The live audience in Puerto Rico made WWE Backlash feel like a big four PLE. The crowd was never silent and chanting at the top of their lungs throughout the show, truly restoring the feeling of the joy professional wrestling brings.
One of the beautiful wrinkles added in Puerto Rico was the use of a drone camera, which soared throughout the arena giving angles of fans and the squared circle. These are timeless visuals we are certain to be still discussing at the end of the year. Also, with the company set to host the following two shows internationally, a bigger discussion about hosting shows outside of the states may become the norm due to the positive reception.
Solo Almost Snaps
There’s a ton of discourse on the Bloodline saga post-Wrestlemania, some good and some bad. With certainty, the journey for the popular family is far from complete. The six-man tag was put in a terrible spot on the card, having to be squeezed between both matches coined the “double main event.” Still one of the bigger moments of the night was Solo almost losing it and spiking his brother Jey.
The Bloodline would pick up a much-needed victory, but when Roman Reigns finally returns in Tennessee on Smackdown all eyes will be on the three brothers. Solo has been pledging his allegiance to Roman for some time now and has been given the green light to dispose of the Usos. The telling moment was Jey pleading with Solo stating “I’m your brother, not him.” The “him” in that statement is clearly referring to Roman. The rebirth of “main event” Jey Uso could be on the way.
Everything about the San Juan Street fight
Bad Bunny had arguably the biggest pop of the year, and there’s some stiff competition there. The match itself showcased how dedicated he is when working with the company. The biggest musical artist in the world put on a stellar wrestling display showcasing the “Bunny Destroyer,” and even a “Michinoku Driver.” Not to be overshadowed was the music star putting his body on the line, and taking all the bumps Damien Priest put him through. All done out of true love for this sport.
There were no shortcuts taken and Puerto Rico pulled up for the WWE Backlash host, Bad Bunny. It is truly mind-boggling how this match did not close the show. The genuine surprise of Carlito coming to the aid of Bunny and Savio Vega helping take care of Judgement Day lit the crowd on fire. The image of Bad Bunny being propped up by the LWO along with Carlito and Savio Vega is already a top three photo of the year. The fact that Bad Bunny can stake the claim as the greatest celebrity wrestler this early is real, and it’s time to consider him the part-time act storyline-wise as the company does Logan Paul.
