Wes Lee is continuing to exceed expectations as WWE NXT North American Champion.
Memorial Day Weekend had a lot of action across all professional wrestling. AEW and WWE each had big PPVs, with WWE having two by the time the holiday rolled around. One highlight of both shows was Wes Lee, who successfully defended the WWE NXT North American Championship for a record tenth time. Lee is riding a wave of momentum. Every time he steps into the ring, he continues to elevate the North American title and prove that he’s the true worker’s champion of the company.
It’s astounding to watch where Lee has pushed himself today in NXT. When he and Nash Carter stepped into the brand as MSK back in 2021, they were immediately inserted into the tag team picture. They had an immediate impact on that division, becoming two-time tag team champions. There was a loud buzz that they had the potential to become the best team in the entire company, but that fell apart when Carter was released. Concern for Lee’s future became apparent, but Lee quickly quieted all those thoughts.
As a singles performer, Lee has come into his own under the Shawn Michaels-led brand. He initially seemed to be a good player on the roster, someone that would help build the main event talent. But his run through 2022 and into 2023 presents Lee as a main event player in his own right.
In ten title defenses, Lee has not only looked great as an in-ring performer, but fans have also watched him develop into a confident champion that is capable of successfully defending that title. He’s picked up wins against a solid mid-card that includes Axiom, Nathan Frazer, Dijak, Ilja Dragunov, and others – making them look great along the way. Not only is he defending this championship on PPVs, but he’s doing so on a weekly basis as well. The last time Wes Lee was defeated in singles competition was back in September 2022 by JD McDonagh.
The verdict on Wes Lee’s ceiling is still out. Can he become NXT Champion? How would he be utilized on the main roster? Both those questions feel a long way away from answering. But what is known is that Lee is excelling in his current role. He’s a performer that both fans and WWE leadership can count on to put together a great match at any spot on the card. Not only is he excelling as the worker’s champion in WWE, but he and Orange Cassidy are neck-and-neck for that accolade across all North American wrestling.
