Reforming The Way on the WWE main roster

The Way was an enjoyable group on WWE NXT and could be a strong addition to either main roster show.

Factions are all the rave in professional wrestling. The Bloodline imploded on SmackDown and fans are tuned into every piece of the epic story. The Blackpool Combat Club continues to hand out fades judiciously in All Elite Wrestling. There are plenty of others in wrestling that are having an impact and perhaps it’s time for WWE to revisit a beloved group from WWE NXT. It’s time to bring back The Way on the main roster but with some slight differences from what was seen in the “developmental” brand.

Johnny Gargano, Candice LeRae, Dexter Lumis, Indi Hartwell, and Austin Theory were an excellent group in NXT. What started out as a perplexing amalgamation of performers, became one of the most interesting groups on the show. They were able to combine comedic timing and angles, with amazing in-ring talent with veterans like Gargano and LeRae, mixed in with the youth of the future in Theory and Hartwell. Lumis, who was the most perplexing of the group, even added on his own to bring the whole group to fruition.

Now, what would The Way look like on the main roster? Both Gargano and LeRae are getting video packages to show some type of potential push coming soon. Hartwell was dealing with an injury that forced her to drop the NXT Women’s Championship, but she’s also on the main roster. Lumis is there, but he hasn’t been used much since his return angle in 2022. Theory has hit a stale patch as the United States Champion, not quite showing the flare that would convince many that he’s the next man up in the WWE’s eyes.

There are three angles that could work if The Way returned

The first involves a returning Tommaso Ciampa. He and Gargano were one of the best tag pairings in recent times. Imagine the story of Gargano trying to convince Ciampa to join him in the “family.” That would have comedic value, but the return of DIY would be an immediate shot in the arm for the WWE tag team division.

Then there was the story between Nikki Cross and Candice LeRae. Cross’s fascination with LeRae wasn’t of a devious nature, but because the former didn’t have any “family” of her own. This a great call back to all the members of SAnity being released over the years. While Hartwell deals with her injury, LeRae and Cross could become an interesting tag team, or a story dealing with their blossoming friendship on camera.

And there’s still the opportunity to tell the story of Theory returning to the fold. If WWE played up their time together in NXT, there is a path to seeing Theory coming around and joining the group on the main roster. There are some changes that would need to happen to the group on one show, but when has the brand split ever mattered long-term?

Would The Way work on WWE’s main roster? Perhaps, there’s a chance that their mix of comedy and wrestling could get over with the fans. This group was packed with talented performers and if given the opportunity they could shine as a fan-favorite attraction on either SmackDown or Monday Night Raw.
