Five big matches for Will Ospreay if he signs with WWE
Will Ospreay would be an excellent addition to the WWE roster with several big matches such as these waiting for him in his new promotion.
Rumors are growing about Will Ospreay’s status as a free agent. Widely considered by many to be the top candidate for the 2023 Wrestler of the Year, Ospreay continues to put on an astounding performance in professional wrestling. While AEW jumped out as the assumption of where he would land next, there’s growing buzz that WWE will put out an effort to land the 30-year-old performer. If that was to be the outcome there would be several big matches available that would set the wrestling community on fire.
Fightful Select reported that WWE has shown “heavy interest” and that sources claim “conversations and contact” have occurred between the two sides. There’s no telling how this will play out, and many will not believe the reported outcomes until Ospreay shows up in a promotion’s ring and he gets a full-fledged announcement of some kind. But speculation will continue to abound, including what matches would await Ospreay in WWE. There are several that would be interesting iterations of matches seen in the past, but there are a few first-time matches that would blow the doors off the building.
Ricochet
Will Ospreay and Ricochet have put on some excellent matches in the past. Excellent to some, controversial to others. Their 2016 match caused so much of an outcry that Ospreay found himself booked into a match against former WCW Champion, Vader because of it. And in the eyes of many their 2017 match was even better. Pitting these two against each other would be the perfect way to introduce Ospreay to the WWE audience.
It would be interesting to see how a match between the two men in 2023 or 2024 would differ from their matches back in 2016 and 2017. The two men are older, and more seasoned in their game, and their styles have changed a bit from what we saw back in the day. While “spots” are still a big part of their wrestling, pausing and posing aren’t as prevalent. Would that style of wrestling work in WWE? Or even better, would WWE be willing to try something different and let them have such a match? The story is certainly there to build this match and on the biggest stage that WWE can present, it would be an amazing showcase of what professional wrestling looks like in this generation.
