AJ Styles: One Final Phenomenal Run in TNA
By Bill Yankowy
When discussing the history of Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, one of the first names that will be mentioned is AJ Styles. From the beginning of TNA, Styles did everything he could in the promotion. First-ever X Division champion, multiple-time world heavyweight champion, tag team champion, and Bound for Glory Series winner are among his many achievements. However, age catches up with everybody and has caught up to AJ Styles. Who knows how many more years Styles has left before he decides to retire?
But what if AJ Styles had one last run in the promotion that made him famous? With the recent working agreement between WWE and TNA, it’s very possible that the “Phenomenal One” goes back to where he made his name and had a farewell tour in TNA instead of WWE. This would be a treat not only to the fans of TNA Wrestling but also to wrestling fans in general.
Styles has changed since he last wrestled in TNA over a decade ago and the roster has changed as well. The possibilities of matches he could have before he says goodbye would be amazing. He could have rematches with wrestlers he wrestled against in WWE or his time in TNA. Matches against Jeff Hardy, where Styles proved he could stay with the best, would be intriguing. Or perhaps a match with Nic Nemeth, who has had a renaissance in his career would be very interesting. Let’s not forget a match or two with Frankie Kazarian could have fans reminiscing about the early 2000s when they both had some memorable matches in the ring.
But what about dream matches? There are many that exist and a final go around in TNA would be the time for Styles to have these matches. One match that comes to mind right away would be with “Speedball” Mike Bailey. Bailey can go move for move and hold for hold with some of the very best wrestlers in the world today. His high-flying ability and wrestling style remind me of a younger AJ Styles. It would be very exciting to see the past and the present of high-flying wrestling face off.
How about a match with a wrestler who is currently on the minds of everyone, Joe Hendry. While Hendry has wrestled on multiple occasions in NXT, a match with Styles would have people sitting down around the television to watch. While a match with Bailey would be a match of the same styles, a match with Hendry would be the complete opposite. This would be of the entertainer of Joe Hendry against the true veteran of AJ Styles. The crowd would no doubt be split as far as who they think would win the match.
Instead of a singles match, maybe AJ Styles would want to go for a tag team match and right now there is no better tag team in TNA than Ace Austin & Chris Bey, also known as ABC. If either Austin or Bey had a one-on-one match with Styles it would be exciting, but a tag team match with Styles involved? That would be must-watch television that every wrestling fan would want to watch. Styles is no stranger to tag team wrestling and could team up with anybody on the TNA roster and would have a great tag team match with ABC. The possibility of dream matches in TNA with AJ Styles would be endless.
So, let’s say that AJ Styles has one final run in TNA, how would it come to an end? How would you thank a man who carried the promotion on his back, brought it to the mainstream and is responsible for putting this promotion on the wrestling map? Pretty easy I believe. He would be inducted into the TNA Wrestling Hall of Fame. Then, he can have his final match for TNA at their biggest show of the year, Bound for Glory.
Styles was apart of the very first Bound for Glory nineteen years ago and would be very fitting for Styles to have his final match in TNA Wrestling at the biggest show of the year for the promotion. A fitting tribute to a man who helped TNA Wrestling in many ways. Will this scenario ever happen? For right now, the answer is sadly no. With his recent foot injury, it could be a while before we see Styles back in the ring. However, with the working agreement going on between WWE and TNA, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Styles made a pit stop in TNA before going back to the WWE.
AJ Styles is a man who has done it all in professional wrestling. He has wrestled some of the biggest names in the industry, wrestled in some of the most iconic venues in the world and has won some of the most prestigious titles in wrestling history. However, one last run at the promotion that made him famous, TNA Wrestling, would be a phenomenal way to end what has been a legendary and phenomenal career in pro wrestling. It’s time for AJ Styles to go back home to TNA Wrestling.
