The business side of professional wrestling continues to become an interesting talking point across social media. Another entry into the debate popped up as news surfaced that WWE is planning a September PLE. Why, may you ask? For no other reason than to counter-program another major AEW PPV, AEW All Out.

John Pollock and Brandon Thurston of POST Wrestling reported that WWE is planning to add a PLE on September 20 in Indianapolis, Indiana. That date is important because it’s the same date as AEW All Out 2025, which is set to go down at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Canada.

AEW All Out was initially announced back in May, with tickets going on sale on June 2. On August 5, WrestleTix reported that 8,833 tickets were distributed, nearly 82 percent of the total planned capacity.

WWE has intentionally scheduled shows against announced AEW PPVs in the past. NXT Battleground was put against AEW Double or Nothing back in May. AEW All In had a whole weekend of events booked against it and NXT Heatwave is scheduled against AEW Forbidden Door on August 24. That’s peculiar, as officials in WWE have openly claimed that AEW is not competition.

Still, the idea of whether these practices are working is up for debate. AEW consistently puts on better professional wrestling, and those big PPVs create several talking points leading into the week that follows. WWE typically has strong revenue showings, which in reality is always the bottom line for organizations of that size. Counter programming against AEW is an attempt to suck up as much of the oxygen to cover professional wrestling, and that is the true threat to competition standing in the way of WWE becoming the only viable promotion at the top of the industry again.

Brock Lesnar versus John Cena rumored for AEW vs WWE night

There is an interesting piece to this development. Rumors are growing that WWE is planning to use John Cena versus Brock Lesnar as the anchor match to buoy its show against AEW. While the in-ring of that match will not compare to the big matches on AEW All Out, it is a bigger showcase than anything AEW can put forth for lapsed or casual fans who could be attracted to either show. The controversy surrounding Lesnar’s return is sure to carry headlines and generate major clicks heading into the PLE.

Fans can expect AEW All Out to be stacked with big matches across the card. Some consider All In to be the best PPV the promotion has done, and yet Tony Khan continues to look for ways to improve with every big PPV. It will be interesting to see what is on the card seeing how there’s a strong chance this will be the toughest competition they’ve faced against a head-to-head card to date.

Competition is great in professional wrestling and business across the board. WWE may claim it doesn’t have any, but AEW is certainly on the mind. Look forward to another big weekend of wrestling on September 20.
