The women's tag team division in AEW has improved significantly over the past year. With a few additions to an already solid division, the women have been given more opportunities to showcase their abilities. AEW WrestleDream provided fans with four matches total (3 on main card, 1 on pre-show), and the addition of the AEW Women's Tag Team Championships could likely increase that even more. One of those matches was the pre-show AEW Tailgate Brawl -- Willow Nightingale and Harley Cameron versus Megan Bayne and Penelope Ford to give a solid teaser for what to expect.
Although Nightengale and Cameron are a crowd favorite, on the AEW Dynamite following WrestleDream (last week), the bracket to crown the first-ever AEW Women’s Tag Title Champions was revealed. They didn't get a friendly draw for their first round opponent.

Once the bracket came out, it was clear who the winner would be.
Mercedes Moné and Athena Will Win Titles
As Athena mentioned in her pitch to Moné to align forces to the greater good at more championship gold, they're both in AEW to make history of their own. What was once one of the greatest rivalries in AEW has become a temporary alliance to become the first-ever AEW Women's Tag Team Champions.
Just six months ago, Athena and Moné went head-to-head in a singles match in the Owen Cup Semi-Finals, in which Moné came out on top. So many fans wanted a feud for either the TBS Championship or the ROH Championship, but never really got it.
Instead, the two could partner up and add to their already impressive list of accolades and enhance their legacies even further. The "CEO" currently holds 12 championship belts from various promotions across the world. This is a record that surpasses Ultimo Dragon's record for holding 11 titles at the same time. Her continuously winning belts has begun (or for a while) has frustrated some fans to the point where AEW could troll it by adding another title to the record with the tag titles. It would even more solidify Moné's argument for the best women's wrestler in the world.
For Athena, it helps her sustain her legacy in ROH, but also gives her a little more bragging rights in AEW. The first AEW Women's Tag Team Champions being arguably two of the best solo competitors in women's wrestling today, instantly bring a tremendous amount of prestige to those titles. Athena is the reigning, defending ROH Women's World Champion and has embarked on a legendary 1,000-day reign. Both superstars come from WWE and entered a new chapter in their respective careers and have become even bigger global stars since. The story writes itself for both of these stars to align to capture the women's tag titles, and eventually tensions will boil over and one will turn on the other. Then, fans get the feud they were wanting all along after the Owen Cup earlier this year.
