CM Punk versus Seth Rollins is a great way to kick off 2025
The January 6 debut of WWE Monday Night Raw is shaping up to be a huge event. In the eyes of many, this has the potential to be the most important episode of Monday Night Raw in the 30-year existence of the show. WWE is treating it as such, booking some massive matches for that night. Headlining the show with CM Punk versus Seth Rollins is the right move and one that has the potential to set the tone for 2025.
CM Punk and Seth Rollins are two of the biggest names in professional wrestling. They are the type of performers who immediately draw in fans, regardless of what they are doing. Since Punk’s return to WWE one year ago, fans have wanted to see how things would play out between the two. There’s a lot of speculation about their relationship behind the scenes, and whether those issues would come to life as the story is told.
What has made this developing angle so important is that WWE has done just enough to keep Punk and Rollins in orbit of each other, without pitting them directly against each other. At least that was the case up to the January 6 show. Now, there are no titles in play, no main events to debate, just Rollins and Punk finally putting their issues with each other to bed with their abilities. Regardless of the outcome, this will not be the only time they do battle. It can’t be. There’s too much story to tell between the two men before moving them in different directions. This is especially integral with this being January 2025, leading into the uber-important WrestleMania season.
Punk should be the early favorite when discussing this bout. WWE has kept him well-protected through much of his return. He could be the next man up to challenge GUNTHER for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, and picking up a win over Rollins builds momentum for that bout. But this will be a feud in which both men will pick up victories over each other. Expect it to be extended as one of the focal points of 2025.
Seth Rollins versus CM Punk is the type of match that should put butts in seats, both at the venue and in front of televisions around the world. These are two of the best performers in the business today. WWE using them as the featured names on its Netflix debut makes all the sense and kicks off what should be an amazing new year in pro wrestling.
