During the Friday, April 11 edition of WWE SmackDown, Cody Rhodes referenced a name that is seldom mentioned on WWE television. He said Brock Lesnar during his promo and like clockwork, speculation started online that the former UFC and WWE Champion could be in line to make a return to WWE. However, that is not the case as reported by Fightful Select.
“Despite the Brock Lesnar name drop, we were told there had not been consideration or conversations regarding bringing him back.”
Rhodes mentioned Lesnar when talking about the opponents he faced leading into his match against Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40. He would go 2-1 against Lesnar during that run, defeating him at Backlash and SummerSlam, while dropping their match at Night of Champions. That SummerSlam match was Lesnar’s last match in the promotion.
WWE does not need to bring Brock Lesnar back to action
Initially, Lesnar was not referenced by name in the Janel Grant lawsuit which names Vince McMahon, John Laurinaitis, and the WWE. The initial allegations mentioned a former UFC Champion, which was then confirmed by additional reporting. Since then, Lesnar has been named directly in the lawsuit.
WWE went to major lengths to remove him from the majority of the latest edition of WWE 2K. He appears during some of the story content, but he is no longer a playable character.
Even as the allegations against Lesnar in the Grant lawsuit hang over him and the WWE, there is still a vocal group of online fans who wish to see him return. Bringing him back would fly in the face of the idea that this iteration of WWE is doing any work to improve it’s culture. The Janel Grant lawsuit, along with the Ring Boy lawsuit, which is also under way, shines a light on the problematic culture that was prevalent in the promotion for years. WWE must do more to push itself away from those bad actors, and that includes keeping away from Brock Lesnar while these allegations loom.
Lesnar was also in the headlines recently when headlines popped up that he told a fan he’s retired from wrestling, but that story has not been confirmed by any major outlets.
