There’s always a hot debate topic on social media when it comes to professional wrestling. This week, the topic turned to Blake Monroe as she was caught up in a precarious situation on the December 16 episode of WWE NXT. Thea Hail “accidentally” won the WWE NXT Women’s North American Championship, causing some voices online to seize the moment to take shots at Hail, WWE, and Monroe. It is far too soon to claim Monroe’s run is a failure, but that doesn’t mean it should be without criticism.
It has barely been six months since Blake Monroe made her first appearance in WWE on June 3. Even before she set foot in WWE, the same people who were praising her work in All Elite Wrestling switched to the attack because she made the jump to the competitor.
On one hand, some of the discourse made sense. Monroe was coming off of an amazing run as Mariah May, where she and Toni Storm were putting on some of the best content in not only the promotion, but all of wrestling. The story that they told which culminated in the Hollywood Ending match at AEW Revolution was some of the best in the business.
There was a key promo leading into the match which many still cling to. Storm told May/Monroe that she was doomed to mediocrity and that is what many are claiming her run in WWE will be when it is over. That’s quite the claim, and one that many will hold to no matter what accolades she achieves.
Blake Monroe: What can be in WWE
Blake Monroe is only 27 years old. In the six months she’s been in WWE, she’s already captured a title, one that has a budding, but new legacy in the company. She’s playing the typical heel character seen in the women’s division. This accidental loss to Hail is a minor blip in her run, but it is one that should cause a pivot that results in her being pushed to the main roster.
Blake Monroe would fit perfectly on SmackDown to feud with some of the women there. The character she’s presenting would be an interesting foil to the likes of Charlotte Flair, Alexa Bliss, Jade Cargill, Bianca Belair, Tiffany Stratton and others. With the talent of those women involved, and the resources available to WWE, there’s no reason to think that Monroe couldn’t be a bigger star if the opportunity is presented to her. And that’s a big “if” to take into account. WWE has shown that the company can easily miss on talent, and has struggled with bringing in many stars from other companies. Monroe may find herself in the same position.
Blake Monroe has all the makings to be a major star in WWE. She has the looks, personality, and in-ring ability that the company tends to covet in the women at the top of the card. If she gets her chance, she’ll prove that point. But the bigger question is if that opportunity will even come.
