Dominick Mysterio ran his mouth one too many times. On the November 10 episode of WWE Monday Night Raw, Mysterio had too much to say to John Cena and Triple H. The latter set up an immediate title match that cost Mysterio the title. Now, John Cena is the WWE Intercontinental Champion at the end of his in-ring career. That sets up a perfect opportunity to close out his run with the WWE.
First, putting the title on John Cena now creates additional stakes for the "Last Time is Now" Tournament. Not only will the winner get a match against Cena at WWE Saturday Night's Main Event, but they may get a shot at the IC title.
Fans should expect Cena to go out on his back, as he's been known to want to put performers over during the latter part of his career. Imagine if that defeat came at the hands of someone like Oba Femi, who could be a surprise entrant in this tournament. Early reports were that GUNTHER was the name selected to face Cena in his last match, but Gunther doesn't need another run as IC champion. Defeating John Cena and taking the IC title would be a huge moment and create a lot of excitement about a new performer on the main roster.
This also sets up an important rematch for Dominick Mysterio. There are reports that Cena and Mysterio are scheduled to have a match at Survivor Series: WarGames. November 29 is one of the last dates on John Cena's retirement tour. Booking a rematch against Mysterio would make sense, but it is a match that Mysterio does not need to win.
Finally, this gets the Intercontinental Championship off Dominik Mysterio, giving him the space to focus on the AAA Mega Championship. It will be interesting to see how much Mysterio is leveraged on WWE television as he's set to the central face to AAA. Dominik Mysterio has the potential to be a huge babyface for WWE, but he did not need to carry two championships at this time. Getting the IC title off of him and onto Cena is right move.
John Cena winning the WWE Intercontinental Championship was the right move. It sets up some great opportunities heading into Cena's last match on December 13 and gives Dominick Mysterio some room to do other things.
