The John Cena Retirement Tour is winding down. What started out as an abysmal development has turned a corner and is delivering is many different ways. Cena’s last match is set for December 13 at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, DC. WWE announced a tournament to determine the man who will stand across from Cena when that night comes. This tournament has the potential to be a fun showcase and build to that big match.
Several names for the tournament have been announced. The Miz, Rusev, Sheamus, Solo Sikoa, LA Knight, Drew McIntyre, Penta, Carmelo Hayes, Bronson Reed, GUNTHER, and Dominik Mysterio. This group includes key names, and their interactions will advance current storylines in several ways.
But the entire field is announced to have 16 men. So, this list creates the space for some interesting additions to the brackets. Fans are speculating that WWE will tap into WWE NXT and beyond to fill those gaps. These may be the opening to see individuals like Trick Williams and Oba Femi appear on the main roster. Trick Williams has done all he can in NXT, and Femi recently said he wants to be the man to retire John Cena.
There’s also a chance that WWE could go beyond its doors to find entrants as well. Think about WWE bringing back Matt Cardona for a final chance to get a match against John Cena. Expect someone to say Joe Hendry’s name and he pops up in the tournament as well. This is an opportunity to do something fun and bring a bit of excitement into the fold.
Current rumors are that GUNTHER is the pick to be Cena’s last opponent. That would be a good move to keep Gunther in a relevant position and outside of the title picture. It would be interesting to see who is booked to come out on top. It is believable that Gunther would beat Cena, but he also would not be too damaged from taking that loss.
John Cena’s wrestling career is nearly over. The last match is on the schedule, and now it is time to find out who he will face. “The Last Time is Now” Tournament should be a fun showcase for everyone involved and a chance for WWE to do something fun for its fans.
