WWE Mexico is happening. There are several reports about WWE planning a major event in Mexico City, and the acquisition of AAA is a move to further that goal. The plans for WWE Mexico and that purchase created a bit of concern about the potential involvement of one Alberto Del Rio or Alberto El Patron, the current AAA Mega Champion. A report from Fightful Select points to a major hint that the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion will not be involved, at least initially.

Fightful Select released a report that includes information about an upcoming match between El Hijo Del Vikingo and Alberto Del Rio the week before the Worlds Collide PLE on June 7. Expectations are that Vikingo will take the title from Del Rio in that match. Fightful reported information from a source that included “Even if they keep Del Rio in the company, that belt is almost surely coming off of him.”

Vikingo is expected to be a major part of the AAA acquisition and WWE’s move into Mexico. He’s a major wrestling superstar in that country, and one of the most beloved performers from Mexico in recent years. Within the last year he’s popped up in All Elite Wrestling and was featured at WrestleMania “saving” Rey Fenix after his defeat at the hands of El Grande Americano.

There was a lot of online backlash around the idea of Alberto Del Rio returning to WWE. There were some initial reports that he’d signed a new deal with the company, however that was rebuffed with information that his contract was acquired via the purchase of AAA. Either way, vocal fans pushed back against the idea that he’d return to the company after several incidents both in the company and outside of it.

Cody Rhodes potentially headlining major WWE show in Mexico

Additional news about WWE Mexico featured an idea that Cody Rhodes would headline the show. This note caused some online chuckling because Rhodes, who is bi-racial as his mother is Cuban, is not of Mexican descent. It would be fun to see Rhodes facing off against one of the major names on the roster who are from Mexican descent. The roster features several performers who could fill that void like Andrade, Rey Mysterio, The Lucha Brothers, Dominik Mysterio, or Santos Escobar. Rhodes versus any of those performers in a singles match would be an attractive headliner for that show.
