The Street Profits, Motor City Machine Guns, and DIY had a point to prove on the April 25 edition of WWE SmackDown. And prove that point they did with an amazing Triple Threat TLC match for the WWE Tag Team Championship. Fans are talking about several aspects of what made that match special, with special attention going to Montez Ford. Ford continues to remind fans that he has the potential to be a singles star, and the fans continue to agree.
This isn’t a new conversation. Even before Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins broke through on the main roster in 2019. Since then, there have been calls to see Ford win the Monday in the Bank briefcase or be involved in the King of the Ring Tournament; any type of setting that would allow him to shine on his own.
However, not only do those moments still seem to be outside his grasp; but the Street Profits were underutilized up until their recent title reign. Before this run, their last time holding the title was back in 2021, which is almost hard to believe when looking at how invested fans are in this duo.
But bringing the conversation back to Montez Ford, he checks all the boxes. He stands 6’1, weighs in at 231 pounds, so he has the size and has been adding to his physique. He can work on the microphone, delivering passionate, in-character promotions whenever he gets the opportunity. His in-ring doesn’t disappoint, even though he shines in tag team matches, he’s put on some great contests on his own as well. Look back at his match against Roman Reigns in 2021 as an example.
Still, the opportunities do not come his way. He’s had only 19 broadcasted singles matches since 2020. Not nearly enough to get over to the level that fans hope to see.
Angelo Dawkins would get his shine as well
Another counter argument is that a singles push for Ford would leave Angelo Dawkins by the wayside. That doesn’t be the case as there are several ways he could branch out on his own without there needing to be a big storyline breakup. It all lies in the story telling that WWE seems to not give the space for on the main roster when it comes to men like Dawkins and Ford.
WWE has a stacked roster of performers across all its shows. Everyone of them will not reach star status. However, it’s tough to see someone like Montez Ford perform at the level he does and ignore the fact that he should have a chance to break out as a singles performer. Will it ever come? Only time will tell, but the odds do not seem to be in his favor.
