SummerSlam season is running wild, with just about a week left before the pillar event on August 3. While some complain about the announced matches, specifically Cody Rhodes versus Solo Sikoa, it’s clear that this contest is setting the stage for a major Roman Reigns return at the end of the show.

Look at what is happening on SmackDown each week. The Bloodline is continuing to run amok, demolishing anyone that stands in their way. The group of men doing so is comprised of Cody Rhodes, Kevin Owens, and Randy Orton. Owens and Orton have already been taken out, with the group adding Paul Heyman to the list of victims just because. With a week left before the PLE, Rhodes will be left standing alone and facing off against four uber-dangerous threats.

Predictable, yes? Great storytelling? Also, yes. WWE does an excellent job setting the stage for big moments and few this year will be bigger than Reigns returning. When his music fits, the response will be deafening. Second only to the moment when he and Rhodes are standing side-by-side in the ring, which will probably be the final shot of SummerSlam 2024. The last time Reigns was seen on television his historic championship run was coming to an end. Now, he’ll find himself assisting the “Son of a Plumber” because his creation in The Bloodline has gotten out of control.

What will be interesting to see is how Rhodes and Reigns will co-exist within SmackDown. Not saying they will be a consistent “team” of any sort, as Reigns should have business to attend to with Rhodes in the future. But more so around the idea that Rhodes is the top champion on the show and within the company, Reigns is the WWE’s biggest star right now – who will be the focal point on SmackDown moving forward? If Reigns turns his attention to The Bloodline, what does Rhodes do in the meantime? Will WWE look to someone like Randy Orton to be a top feud for Cody post-SummerSlam and through Royal Rumble? Rhodes can’t become a secondary figure to The Bloodline angle, even though that’s perhaps the biggest story in professional wrestling today.

The Bloodline angle has had several ups and downs during the last few years. Watching the story unfold in 2024 has been one of the best parts of this year in professional wrestling. The stage is set for Roman Reigns to return at SummerSlam, not only to aid Cody Rhodes but to come face-to-face with his creation, kicking off what will be the next “chapter” of the tale. It’s going to be a massive moment and one that should not be missed.
