Rhea Ripley's major push continues as some fans complain
WWE Survivor Series: WarGames 2024 has come and gone. There’s debate about the quality of the show, but that’s always going to be a thing in today’s age of the online wrestling community. One conversation point is what happened in the women’s WarGames match. Rhea Ripley and company picked up the win, with Ripley pinning WWE Women’s World Champion, Liv Morgan, after putting her through a table with an avalanche Riptide. That victory sparked an interesting debate about whether Ripley is being pushed too hard by decision-makers in the company.
Ripley’s team was never truly at a disadvantage in this match. They had the one-woman advantage throughout the match, and with a roster that featured several multiple-time champions, it was hard to see them as the underdog.
Ripley pinned Morgan, finally getting some semblance of “revenge” over Morgan. Pinning a current champion is a move that frequently garners complaints in professional wrestling, as it is seen to tarnish the reign of the person with the title. They should always be kept strong and with several other women in the match, there were plenty of different ways this could have gone.
Ripley’s win in this match seems to signify she and Morgan have more business left to handle. But what does that mean for the current number one contender, Iyo Sky? When Ripley first suffered the injury to her orbital bone, WWE held a battle royale to determine a new top contender, and that win went to fan favorite, Sky. To see her not factored into the victory makes many think that WWE has no intention of putting her over to regain the title. In all honesty, this should be an easy conclusion for those paying attention to the product.
Sky is a recent champion, but since dropping the belt to Bayley at WrestleMania 40, she hasn’t been the focal point of the women’s division. Yes, she’s put on some great matches – which is commonplace for one of the best wrestlers in the world. But she’s not in the position to be world champion again, that’s the unfortunate truth with the booking direction WWE is going currently.
But what does that say about Ripley’s push? Yes, she has remained at or near the top of the division for much of the last few years. And it should be expected that she’d remain in such a position for a long time. The angle with Morgan has left much to be desired, but it remains perhaps the only woman’s story getting ample screen time on Monday Night Raw. It’s understandable that a contingent of fans feel like Ripley is getting a massive push at the detriment to other women on the roster.
For example, Ripley rarely loses matches. According to Cagematch, she’s a dominating force when it comes to singles matches. Since 2022, she’s lost only 2 times in singles matches that are on broadcasted shows. The Monday Night Raw roster boasts great talent like Kairi Sane, Dakota Kai, Shayna Baszler, and several others. Unfortunately for them, it looks like they will remain on the back burner as Ripley enjoys this run.
Some fans are raising issues with Rhea Ripley picking up yet another big win at Survivor Series: WarGames. Online discourse is usually overblown, but there’s something worth talking about when looking at Ripley’s push compared to others on the roster. Perhaps she’s become the “John Cena” of the women’s division. We’ve seen that play out, and perhaps WWE should take heed as they continue to move forward with this angle.
