The end of WWE Clash in Pairs led to wild speculation that a former WWE Divas Champion may be returning. Becky Lynch helped Seth Rollins retain in the main event against LA Knight, Jey Uso, and none other than CM Punk. It was that moment that led to growing rumors of AJ Lee’s impending return.
Fightful Select quickly reported after the show that its sources have “indicated that AJ Lee’s name has been brought up in numerous pitches internally of late.” While Fightful did not confirm that Lee’s return “is a go,” the report did state that “there has been more traction on it of late than in previous years.”
AJ Lee’s last match was on the March 30 episode of WWE Monday Night Raw back in 2015. She’s been effectively retired, without any hints that she’s intending on returning to action. Even as several professional wrestling names have talked openly about wanting her to come back. Roxanne Perez is one such performer, and she’s talked about wanting to wrestle Lee since joining the company.
AJ Lee is considered an influential member of women’s wrestling history. She held the WWE Divas Championship three times, including her first run that would last 295 days. Lee wrestled during a time in which the women’s division was not given much time in the ring, nor substantial storylines. Still, she found a way to become one of the most important and outspoken members of the community during that time.
Since leaving WWE, AJ Lee has taken part in several other projects within wrestling. That includes taking on a role as an executive producer for Women of Wrestling (WOW) in 2021, alongside Jeanie Buss of the LA Lakers. She left that company in 2023. She also played Elle Dorado in the professional wrestling television series, Heels.
