The New Day badly needed a new look
The New Day is one of the most important factions in professional wrestling. For the last decade, fans have clapped along with Big E, Xavier Woods, and Kofi Kingston. But after the December 2 episode of Monday Night Raw, the duo of Woods and Kingston are heading down a dark path. A path that adds a fresh, new look at the two at a time in which they desperately needed it.
The New Day achieved it all. Multiple-time tag team champions. Individual championships and accolades as well. Still, the group had become stagnant in recent years. The last time something “fresh” happened to them was back in 2022 when they suddenly appeared on WWE NXT and captured the tag team titles there for a 56-day run. It was something different that was needed for the team.
It seemed like fans would always cheer for Woods and Kingston. Even when the group was first introduced back in 2014, they were meant to be heels, but fans cheered them because each individual was a beloved figure in their own right. Well, the turn on Monday Night Raw finally got them the massive heel heat they always wanted. All it took was for them to turn on their injured partner, and the response came swiftly.
This “new look” New Day will be an interesting addition to the WWE tag team division. The main roster has two sets of championships, but both divisions feel about as non-important as they ever have before. The Judgment Day rarely defends those titles, and as excellent an addition the Motor City Machine Guns are, they haven’t generated the buzz necessary to build intrigue in the teams on SmackDown. Hopefully, The New Day turning heel in such an important storyline helps change that direction.
It would be even more interesting to see what they achieve as singles stars as well. They achieved success not only as a faction, but as individual performers as well. So, it will be interesting to see if they keep their thirst for individual success going and how that factors into their overall direction. Things will get even more captivating if Big E is cleared and becomes major opposition for both men. Or perhaps he joins their quest. There are so many different directions this could go.
Fans have long said they wanted to see something “different” for The New Day. Well, different is exactly what happened on the latest episode of Monday Night Raw. Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston did the unthinkable, and they have all the momentum to become a different breed of tag team in the future.
