The tag team division needs a complete rebuild

WWE's tag team division has been in a dire state for quite some time.

WWE has never cared about tag team wrestling, and that's never been more obvious. While there's nothing wrong with a super team like AJ Styles and Dragon Lee winning the titles, WWE's booking of the tag division has seemingly never been worse.

Earlier this year, The New Day defeated The War Raiders at WrestleMania to win the WWE World Tag Team Championships. Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods executed one of the best heel turns in recent memory and were rewarded with a nine-minute tag match at WrestleMania.

The fact that the match was even on the WrestleMania card is a miracle, but Kingston and Woods held those titles for only 72 days. They defended the titles just once in that span before losing them to Finn Balor and JD McDonagh.

Representing The Judgement Day, Balor and McDonagh's second reign came to an end thanks to Styles and Lee. Now, they're set to get a rematch on next week's edition of Monday Night RAW. For whatever reason, they've been the mainstays of RAW's tag division for the past year.

Despite having two combined reigns for just under 300 days, those two only defended the titles three times. RAW's tag division has only consisted of The Judgement Day, New Day, and The War Raiders. On Smackdown, things seemed to getting better until they reached a screaching hault.

For the better part of a year, WWE's booking of the tag division on Smackdown was one of the best in the entire world. Numerous teams were featured on a weekly basis, though it seems like they only put that sort of attention into the divison because they had to produce a three-hour show.

Even during all of that, the crowd remained dead silent for the tag team segments. No matter how hard WWE tried, they couldn't get anything going. The Motor City Machine Guns have been with the company for a year now, but it feels like they've done absolutely nothing.

Sure, there have been a few crazy multi-person tag matches on Smackdown, but at the end of the day that's just lazy booking. DIY and MCMG's tag match at the Royal Rumble seemed like their last attempt to put something together, but since then they haven't even tried.

How To Save The Tag Division

At this point, it feels like WWE is at a point of no return. It would be fantastic if they just had one set of tag team titles, because clearly two of them is too much to put on their plate. The tag titles never make it on PLE's, and when they do, it's because they're forced to fill matches due to it being two nights or a last second replacement.

A unification match wouldn't save the division, but it could at least freshen things up a bit. Putting the tag titles on Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed seems like a no-brainer on RAW. Knowing how high WWE is on both of those men, it'd be a huge boost to the product to have two prominent singles stars headlining the tag division. Ultimately, something needs to change, and it needs to change fast.
