WWE NXT Review: The Ascension vs. Sami Zayn and Tyson Kidd for the NXT Tag Team Championship

Natalya and JBL backstage

Nattie was backstage with JBL at this past Monday’s Raw, and she talked about the bad week that Tyson Kidd has had. She then said she had the idea of Kidd teaming with Sami Zayn. JBL seemed to like the idea, but scowled when Nattie walked away.

Sasha Banks vs. Alexa Bliss

Bliss won with a roll-up when Banks was distracted by Charlotte and Summer Rae fighting at ringside. After the match, The BFF’s left separately as the crowd chanted for a Triple Threat Match.

This match was decent, though it was much more focused on The BFF’s than it was the actual match. It was also a pretty fair, early showcase for Bliss, in only her third TV match. Bliss looked a little awkward in this match, but she definitely can go. From what I hear, Bliss and Banks stole the show at a recent NXT live event, which doesn’t surprise me that much.

Tyson Kidd and Natalya backstage

Kidd and Nattie were talking about Kidd’s tag title shot with Sami Zayn that Nattie got him, but Kidd is insistent that he could have gotten this shot on his own. Kidd ended up going to find Zayn, leaving Nattie upset with his attitude.

Aiden English and Simon Gotch backstage

The Vaudevillains spoke about how they were going to make a run for the NXT Tag Team Championship together. The whole segment took place looking like a silent movie from the 1920s.

Mojo Rawley vs. Garrett Dylan

Rawley won with the Hyper Drive. Dylan stuck around longer than I thought, but Rawley still got a dominant victory.

Tyson Kidd and Sami Zayn backstage

Kidd and Zayn both talk about their failed attempts at winning the NXT Championship, and agree that this tag title shot is their shot at redeeming themselves.

Aiden English promo/The Vaudevillains vs. Travis Tyler and Angelo Dawkins

English talked about Simon Gotch and what the two of them can do together.

Gotch hit a rolling senton on Tyler, then English followed with a senton from the middle rope for the win.

William Regal spent a lot of the commentary in this match talking about Gotch, and explaining his backstory. He built him up as a strong man that was born at the circus.

Colin Cassady w/ Devin Taylor

Cassady talked about his recent success, but said that something is missing. He then sang “When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s…” then he stopped short of “Amore”, seeming to imply an imminent return for his tag team partner, Enzo Amore.

Rob Van Dam w/ Devin Taylor

Devin asked RVD what he was doing at NXT. RVD talked about how good some of the young guys on Raw and SmackDown are, and how he wanted to see where they were coming from. He talked about the “best guy” in NXT, Adrian Neville, and said he wants to wrestle him.

Kalisto vs. Tyler Breeze

Kalisto had all the momentum at the end of this match, but Breeze hit a Beauty Shot out of desperation and got the win.

I was watching Breeze very closely in this match, and I started to truly appreciate how good he really is. He ‘s always thinking about how he can make a match better, and he does all the little things well. It’s a lot of fun to watch guys like him.

As for Kalisto, he has been thrust into big matches. He was in the tag title match at NXT Takeover, now this match against Breeze. He was unimpressive at Takeover, but he made up for it here. He looked great against NXT’s #1 Contender, and, with his athleticism, he could be a big star for years to come.

Tyson Kidd and Sami Zayn vs. The Ascension

After failing to get in the match, Kidd left Zayn on his own, allowing The Ascension to hit Zayn with Fall of Man.

Kidd was yelling at Zayn while he was in the ring, telling him he can take the whole match if he wants it that bad, but Zayn was trying to make the tag, so they are building to Kidd becoming more and more unreasonable. Kidd is really growing into this role and I think he can do big things with it, he’s so talented.

Overall Impression

This was a really fun show. Any show with Sasha Banks, Tyson Kidd, Sami Zayn, Colin Cassady, Rob Van Dam or Tyler Breeze is good, so all of them made this a guaranteed winner. Sometimes you have to take a step back and analyze just how talented the NXT roster is. A show like tonight’s makes it pretty easy to see.

Tonight was really no different from every other Thursday, when I am reassured of how bright WWE’s future is.
